Horror Shot - Eddie Loves You (finally finished)

I've just finished spending around 2-3 months in post on my latest short "Eddie Loves You". (A silly horror, 25 mins).

Anyone in the UK can come and see this on August 17th at the Portobello Film Festival at Westbourne Studios (around 6:45pm).

Also it's up for the Delta Award at the Festival of Fantastic Films on Saturday 2nd Septemeber in Manchester. If you are going to these festivals, please come along as I don't want me and my mate to be the only ones in the audience :)

It is currently in consideration for a few other festivals (in the US too), and Im waiting to hear back; if it gets shown anywhere else I'll update the post.

In the meantime here are some grabs which I hope dont give too much away. If anyone knows of a fun horror festival I could submit this to please let me know.

Edit : 18 Aug.
(nominated for 'Best Cinematography' at the Portobello Film Festival from 600 screened shorts)

Corrected.

You know I found the CC really hard on this. Does anyone else find that you almost have to have a seperate CC for CRT than for LCD?

When I colour corrected for CRT the images on an LCD (computer monitor) are too dark. If I CC for my LCD screen then on the CRT it looks really harsh and videoesque.

The original posted images are from the final graded short and look fine on a CRT TV. However you're right in that they appear dark on an LCD screen. I have brought up the levels of these from my final graded AVI, so these are not perfect as I've just raised the levels.....They now may be too bright, but it gives an idea....

Looks great, mate. I especially like the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th grabs. Is the second grab special effects? the lightning?

Thanks Malcolm.

Yes the lightning is an effect. Infact the whole sky is cg; layers of clouds/noise and random glows. Looks better as a moving sequence.

Portobello Screening!

Portobello Screening!

Thanks to all who came to the screening last night!

It went down really well, and even tho I cowered in the corner I was amazed by the audience reaction to it. Thanks a Lot.

On a more baffling note I got a call from the festival today saying that out of the 600 films screened mine had been nominated for 'Best Cinematograhpy'.

This is amazing as we made it for £250 and pretty much made it up as we went along. It isnt going to win as it's up againt far more expensive looking short films that were actually shot on film! But it's a really nice gesture......

Looks awesome! Any way I can get a DVD?

Also, would you mind me asking how you did the lightning? I am working on a sequence where someone is struck by lightning and I am having troubles.

Did you try running some noise reduction on your footage? It looks pretty noisy in some shots.

Thanks for the kind words.

The lightning was done in AE. Looks bad as default but tweaking it gives good results if appiled with glows on the BGD footage at the same time as strikes. Also worked better adding cloud layers infront of the lightning strikes and softening the edges a little.

The stills here are quite noisy. We shot this almost fully open as it was pretty low light conditions. Maybe 2.4 or 1.7. Occasionally fully open. Low light DV isnt the best starting point for grading. I graded it to make it pop more and bring up the green in the midtones; this has introduced more noise into the image also.

But I think most of the noise you are seeing is because I have lightened these stills for the net only. During grading I noticed that my CRT and LCD would give totally different looks. I ended up grading for my CRT, tho it looks dark on LCD....These stills are from that darkened CRT graded version and then re-lightened for publishing on the net. Faffy, I imagine that's intoduced a lot of noise too.

It looked fine when shown at the cinema on Thursday and didnt look too dark to me.

There is a trailer I'm working on. Unfortunately it wouldn't have any footage from the film in it.

I've never thought about releasing it on DVD before. Not sure it's epic enough for that. I may post it online after the festival circuit. I guess it depends on how it's recieved.

I have actually already done a DVD with the special effects/commentary deleted scenes etc. But did that mainly for my own fun!?!

Hey ! bit drunk, buit just got back from the award ceremony at the festival.

We won best cinematography for Eddie Loves you.!

I have to say the organisers are a really nice bunch of people who provided free drinks in the cinema and then bought us all drinks in the bar down the road afterwards.

I'd reccomend anyone to submit their film to them as they provide a really nice and friendly atmosphere for the film-makers.

sorry if this seems like gloating...lol But I've never submitted my work before and I'm pretty chuffed.... :)

Hopefully I'll have the film online soon

Hi Darkline,

Saw Eddie Loves You at the Festival of Fantastic Films in Manchester this weekend, and thought it was great. Any chance I could convince you to post me a copy of that DVD? And let me know when it is available to view online, as I'm sure I know people who enjoyed it as much as I did.

Well done, Rich.

congratulations!! it was awesome reading this whole thread... like a story... it starts with you saying how you wont win best cinematography, and then you post back on the site while youre drunk "we won!"

excellent work and i cant wait to see footage!!

Yeh sorry about that kyleman..... No more drunken posts :)

Thanks for the comment richard. Did you have a film at the festival yourself?

It was shown on the saturday and after I got back from lunch I missed the announcement of the winner of the delta award. I found out that 'Eddie Loves You' won from someone in the audience tapping me on the shoulder and telling me ...lol. So it was good... but a strange anti-climax. They said they would show the film again on the sunday but I only had passes for the saturday. Do you know if they did show it on the sunday?

As for the DVD, I may put it up for a small cost if there is enough interest. I still have the trailer to do which I'll hopefully post later this week.

If anyone in the US is around my film has been selected for Shockerfest in California (Oct) and also the Chicago Horror Film Festival (Oct) which I think is being held in the portage theatre. I'd love to go myself but it'd be really expensive, does anyone know which is more likely to be the bigger event?
