Horrible Strong Contrast

I am using the peak performance patch shooting AVCHD.

Anyone have any problems with high contrast/little dynamic range? I have contrast set all the way down but it seems like people are getting way better results than...

Any tips?

You might want to shoot with lower contrast and then bump it up in post, so that you capture a higher dynamic range, otherwise you risk going over or under. What you may be seeing is others creative use of color correction, and not necessarily what they shot.

Thanks for the replies... I am shooting smooth with contrast turned all the way down.

It seems to look a lot better if I edit the native AVCHD files in After Effects than transcoding them to Pro Res 422 in Final Cut.

Harsh sunlight is always gonna be bad, but I have seen a lot better un-corrected results on Vimeo. I tried the I.Exposure but that didn't help.

Hmmm...

I'm at a loss here guys... really pulling my hair out over this one. After Pro Res 22 transfer in FCP, images are too saturated and contrasty. Losing color and light information... Shoot smooth mode with everything turned down.

Let me know what you think...

Thanks Lpowell, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be the issue... did encounter that problem on an earlier project though! Any mac guys on here?

Try transcoding to ProRes with something that lets you turn off the gamma correction...maybe Adobe Media Encoder? Compressor does it but not with MTS files...and FCP doesn't seem to have the option on log and transfer. Honestly for the top clip I like the look of the image on the right more! Anyway see if you lose any quality if you roll it back with color correction...I suspect you'll probably be ok actually.

that's not contrast. the highlights and shadows are both darker, meaning what you're seeing is a gamma shift. you should be able to restore things by boosting brightness. i also like the right-side image better! =)
