Horrible glitches in footage

I recorded something last night, and when I look at it today, it has a lot of horrible glitches. Large colored splotches. They don't appear to be in the footage when I play it in camera from the original card, but when I transfer the card contents to my desktop or when I open FCP and view or transfer the footage, the glitches are there. What is going on and how can I get the unglitched footage onto my computer???

I tried 2 different usb cables.

I'm on a mac laptop.

I recorded a long performance just last week with no glitches at all anywhere.

There's nothing wrong with your footage at all (which you already verified by playing it back in-camera). But clearly you have an issue in transferring it to the computer; data corruption is occurring during the transfer. I don't know how to diagnose what's going on with your system that's causing the corruption, but I'd definitely recommend a data-verifying copy program, so you can be certain that all future transfers are copied flawlessly. Unfortunately the only one I can think of that works on OSX is ShotPut Pro; it'll work but if anyone has any other suggestions, hopefully they'll post them here.

I just tried to copy on a friends computer and it worked fine. The only difference is he has FCP 6.0.5 and I have FCP 6.0.4. Could that be it?

It's not a codec issue with the original footage, because the O.P. verified that the footage looked just fine when played back from the cards.

That's why I say it's likely gotten corrupted during the copy from the card to the computer.

Unless -- does any other footage, already on the computer, glitch when you play it back? If so, then yeah, there might be something wacky with the computer's codec.

Final Cut is known to have an issue with transferring HMC footage. I've had the same issue before. The latest versions of Final Cut don't seem to have the same issue, at least not yet. But in FCS 2, I had this issue.

I was told to try Toast to transfer it. That worked for me. I went from having artifacts in FCS 2, to none with Toast.

Do you have Perian installed on the computer?

And did you write protect the card first?

Finally, what codec did you elect in log and transfer when ingesting?

First off, here’s a tiny 1MB excerpt showing what’s going on, with h264 compression and half size. This is from today’s footage with the same card.

So, no ferrite cores on cable, no other footage glitches, no perian install, yes write protected. Problem also arises in imovie.

How do you transfer with Toast???

Update your FCP to the very latest version (FREE - via software updates). As I recall FCP 6.0.6 was the latest version that fixed some AVCHD codec issues. I can't look at my version now because I upgraded to FCP 7.
