well I believe the budget was more like 40 million, and I'm sure bit a lot of that when to the A-list actors in the film.
If yo uare referring to SKY CAPTAIN, bOX OFFICE MOJO puts the budget at $70 million with Est. Marketing Costs: $35 million.

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

Well if I can find Jude Law and Gywneth Paltrow lookalikes that will work for Pizza, I could make it for about $60. ;)

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

I actually I was in the midst of post when I got my first glimpse of Sky Captain. I almost didn't finish the film,
I thought to my self, "well, F*&% It! there goes that movie!".
But my wife encouraged me to keep going, she said "They don't own the whole genera.", so I kept going. I Just won Best Special Effects at my local Film Festival. I am hoping to sell copies on DVD to fund more chapters.

Thanks,

Joseph Fagan

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

Joseph,
Nice work on Ace Derringer. I've always been a big fan of the kind of serial you are referencing there. If you are going to sell DVDs, be sure to post a link here.

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

I really enjoyed that little clip. It is just astounding what can be done by determined DIY-ers.

I was thinking the other day that the gritty, foggy, diffused look of Sky Captain is in large part responsible for how well one can get away with even poorly lit greenscreen sources. It would take much more effort to produce sharp chroma keys for TV movie of the week kind of thing.

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

Speedbump

I agree man. The diffusion really helps and Sky Captain is super diffuse.

I was suprised I actually got a really good key off that green screen and my work lights. That is the beauty of the image generatd by the DVX. I used to try and get mattes from my 1 CCD sony mini DV and it was horrbile.

I had a much sharper version but my friend said it didnt look like sky captain as it wasnt soft and glowy.

So I ran it through Magic Bullet get the diffusion. And boy did that add to the render time. The five second clip took nearly 40 mins to render. Ouch.

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

Joseph,

I would buy your stuff if you relese it in DVD. I loved it! SkyCaptain was good but there was a lot missing. I grew up with Rocketman, Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers (The OLD ones!!!). I would love to see a "come back" of that genre!!!

Cheers!!!

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

Truly,

You ought to get a small crew and blow the doors off Sky Captain, make a dark sinister version of some pilot. I will give the guy credit though he was just like you until Hollywood discovered him.

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

I'm out of breath...how did you extend that green screen in post...and how did you get those foreground elements going...I'd pay for an instructional dvd on how you did that

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

thanks guys,

dillonculp, I used the mask function in vegas to extend the green screen. I am working on a new shot now, that hopefully will look even better. After I have done that. I will try and post a step by step.

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

I too would like to see a tutorial :)

I'm surprised you got that decent of results from (I'm assuming) a simple chromakey....

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

nice work on home made sky captain and that rocket man thing! i get more proud of the dvx and its user base every day. (i think the rocket guy was gl1) the music videos posted here are getting better each time, but man would i like to see one of these feature length movies.

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

Hey Arcburn,

I posted this question on a different string in the forum and I was immediately referenced to you. So here it is:

I need this impossible shot of a conversation taking place on top of a water tower. This is a really important shot and for a good cause.

It would be a night shot of two people resting on the top of the ladder of a water tower addressing the issues of teen suicide.

I would need one shot wide, establishing, with my two actors approaching the ladder. A second shot, tighter in, them climbing the ladder. These two shots I can get.

Now I'm creatively-cum-technically challenged at this point. How can I record their conversation. I went up there myself to test it out but no way I'm taking a camera up there. One of the actors said she wouldn't be able to climb all the way up due to fear of heights. The shoot is in NJ and I can see the George Washington Bridge from the top and no saftey rails.

SO .. I befriended a 3d model animator, rigger. He does rendering etc. He rigged an old bomber airplane for a short and won the oscar for best short animation this past year. So he's talented and agreed to do this project with me.

Now comes the possible solution: getting those two master/establishing shots. Maybe even climb a few rungs above them with the camera secured to my fingers via miniature c-clamps and shoot reveal shots.

From here I would move into the green screen room and use an old airport hanger step ladder as the top portion of the water tower and then my man would create the entire 3D environment. We'll be coordinating a very specific night lighting and hopefully it'll come out.

So I guess I'm shooting for some suggestions, examples of green screen shots, etc. I researched this site and the actual process so I'm not ignorant as to how it works but am looking for pointers and tips if anyone's got em...

Cheers.

Any pointers for me? ;D ;D ;D

BTW- let me also cut/paste what I said after I saw your quicktime file:
HAHAHA awesome!!! Thanks for the link. Looks great!! when the CG portion was swiped back to reveal the room, I snorted orange juice all over my keyboard. I had to go out and buy a new keyboard But I'm so glad I saw it.

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

fyi This new keyboard is GREAT! ViewSonic Slim Keyboard. It's so small, the keys are soft and quiet and it looks cool as hell. :D
