HMC40 vs HPX170

I have that exact model, bought a few months ago from BH, and I assure you it does not have a front thread. If you look closely at the BH image you see there's no "angle" to the apparent grooves.

Ah Clarity. Thanks Graham.

And for those that haven't, go back and read the links he posted early on including a link to a lens hood.

Well I got my Century 0.65x lens yesterday. On first use, it is a nice, solid adapter. Images are pretty good with an acceptable level of barrel distortion. If you shoot a brick wall from 4 feet away, the slight distortion is quite obvious to me, but in normal use I don't think it would annoy "normal" viewers.

At full wide, I did notice some softness (or whatever it is called) in the corners. It's probably one of those things that changes depending on the iris setting. It was a dull night last night here, I was just using ambient light and on auto the camera was turning the gain on, so it wasn't ideal conditions. I would like to see how it works on a nice sunny day.

Having said that, I had a shoot on Sunday in lots of tight spaces where the lens would've been a boon.

I want to more testing soon (and post some sample images).

The Century 0.65x does have filter threads on the front, 67mm, contrary to a post I saw elsewhere.

I just need to get a lens hood now. I think this lens may be a bit small for the Canon XHA1 hood (diameter is 2mm less) and I have yet to find something designed to clamp on an OD of 70mm, so I might just go for a cheapo screw-in rubber hood.

Mike,

I hope you'll post a full resolution photo of the image you get from the lens.

Also, given that my 0.5x Century adapter will provide soft corners when the iris is wide open. As the lens stops down, the corners become sharper.

Hey Bob - as soon as I get some good weather, I'll get round to some proper tests.

I'll probably post in a separate thread so this doesn't get lost.

How about in moderately "lit" interiors? Do you need to pump in the light or is the difference minor? How bout sensitivity compared to a DVX?

I can't compare the HMC to the DVX, I've never used a DVX.

I plan to run a full set of tests (different f-stops, gain, indoor, outdoor etc.) but it will have to wait a few days - I am in the middle of a project that needs to get finished.
