Good points all. The other MAJOR difference for me and why I didn't and wouldn't buy the HMC40 is that it doesn't have a manual lens and I shoot all my stuff like this. Having to hunt and waste time with a zoom motor is just a buzz kill so that's the really big reason that I didn't get a 40. Another point that some like and others wont is that the 40 is a really small camera and personally I found it a compromise in shooting handheld with it....
If you do shoot low-light a lot of time then the HMC40 will not be for you. recently at our church I was shooting side by side with the 40, which is a sharper camera, but it was unable to resolve a decent image during the concert and I was blooming during the shots....
So it is a bit of a compromise. The 40 is almost half the price and it is sharper, but you'll get a bunch of CMOS compromises if you are shooting action events, and if you are in low-light then you are really stuck..... If you are a shooting like me who snap zooms a lot and likes to keep it more on a film style shoot, then not having a manual lens is a deal breaker...
