HMC150 questions answered...

Hey guys,
No problems with the footage on a PC. It looks great. I viewed the clips in their native format using VLC 0.9.2. I also tried converting a few using the Mainconcept transcoder. Those clips looked great as well.

psts, it is not crucial pimarily which app you use but into which codec you transcode.

AfaIk, voltaic does only transcodes into AIC which is inferior compared to Apple ProRes or DVCproHD.
Go to "Options" in Toast and adjust accordingly. You sure will be surprised by the outcome.

I know the toast/DVCproHD is better and it is- but still I was expecting a closer look to the hvx look. I'm still hoping that it's just my system's transcoding that is giving me this coarse look and that when workflows get ironed out I'll be impressed. I'd love to see this on the systems of people on this board who are really impressed and then see if it's either me being overly critical of a $3500 HD camera or does the footage really hold up to HVX footage.

The Cinema 30", while a beautiful monitor, is not intended for crititcal viewing, nor are most computer LCD's. Unless you are running a Matrox MXO or something similar to get true monitoring...

Speaking of true monitoring.. I could use some help on the PC side, if anybody has thoughts - I see that MXO is for a mac. I have a DELL 2407 WFPb and know editing an SD signal was fine, but HD is a whole new ballgame. I am not sure what my monitoring setup should be.

Not sure if this is appropriate to bring up here. Thanks!

i've been trying to keep up with this thread as much as i can(93 pages is a looot). but i'm looking on AValive.com at the specs and it says that the 150 has an auto/manual audio controls. can anyone attest to that?

from their site
http://www.avalive.com/Panasonic/AG-HMC150/49328/productDetail.php
"Two locking XLR inputs with switches for mic/line, +48V Phantom Power, Auto/Manual level, and internal/external assignment"

edit: they must have pulled the text from the panny website, so i guess its true. auto audio settings. nice.

Mangler...
The 150 only comes with MANUAL audio control. The AUTO they are referring to is a AUTO LIMITING
circuit which helps prevent clipping.

Darren,
I think you're footage is impressive. I have two things though. #1 I get bad stuttering on both your clips and the green screen clips from DVXuser. Anybody know that? The other thing is what was your gain settings etc. for the indoor restaurant shot and the outside street shot. Thanks for all of your work. This is exciting. Oh, I'm in Vegas 8.0c and the footage just imports right in lickity split. It plays without any frame lag. I have a Core2Duo 2.4 and 4gigs of RAM on XPpro.
Bill

Exposure was wide open with gain at 0db for the indoor and the night shots. Stutter sounds like system playback of the native avchd clips, just be glad you can play em back with no transcoding!

Hey Darren, it seems like it is dropping frames or something. When I apply the green screen it lags like normal, but this isn't normal. It is stuttering in a way I don't normally see.
Bill

Anybody tried the frame rate hack yet?
I dare you guys... :-)
Anybody put bayonet mount lenses from a dvx on the front yet?
I'm very jealous, can't wait for mine...

Well, just another question is which bandwidth you used to record your clips.
Less than 13 MBs must be inferior compared to HDV. Everything above should turn out at least equal or maybe visibly better.

All my clips were in PH mode (21mbps). Next test will be at the lowest quality (6mbps) setting. Stay tuned!

No problems playing any of the clips ( B.Green and Videoguys ) besides shrigg's. I'm still downloading his ;my connection is still down.Called my isp but they dont care much for the HMC 150.

I played Kurtmo's green footy back with powerdvd and brought them to a
colleague of mine who has this Nero package and it played even better.
Nero showtime was the player.
It even gave me the correct clip info audio bitrate ,framerate and recordrate.
The clip shot at 1920*1080 is extra crispy sharp. I personally like the 720 better.
There is some noise on the footy but it's not noticable right away you have to
look for it. I still haven't decided which one to purchase the HMC 150 or
the hpx 170.Thats why I can't wait to see Shrigg's clips.

Oh and one more question for Barry .The shot of the bird at the lake was that one shot with the DRS function ?
Thanks.

I don't know why you guys are having trouble with the files; obviously there's something going haywire in the transcoding process.

Yes, I believe that bird at the lake was DRS. It was late afternoon and he was deep dark black so I think I put on the DRS on 3 to see what happens and how it would bring him back into latitude, but it made him noisy (which is a potential side effect of DRS).

If anyone can comment on the dvx bayonet mount being the same as the hmc I'd really appreciate it. I'd like to buy the Chrosziel dvx adapter so I can use my mattebox sans rods

Okay I spoke with Panasonic and they told me the bayonet mounts are different. So DVX bayonet accesories will NOT fit.

Barry Book for HMC150

Barry Book for HMC150

Hi

Only my second post.

Walked in with $$ -> out with HMC150.

Question is I notice that one end has a big glass thing...

I think I need Barry's book for HMC150, but does it yet exist?

How do I get it. Wait? Order book for HPX/HVX?

Some advice please.

I hoped Panasonic would include it - baaad Panasonic!
Also NO SD card at all with camera - not even 2GB!
Camera can't record out of the box.
Book and SD card would win a lot of true friends for Panasonic.
Otherwise I feel Panasonic is looking after my needs.

I really need the book!

Thanks in advance for your reply

Signed
Blit (You do know what blitting is, I hope!):)
