HMC150 on camera light / battery options

It WAS a led ring when before I took it apart... You mean one with a 72mm or larger hole in the middle for say macro?

Hrmm, Well I have no problem making the ring setup, just don't have much to use for a custom plastic housing... Ill see what I can come up with... Also the light is cooler then sunlight - Is that going to be a problem?

That would be a problem if you shoot indoor on people. They will all look like corpse :)

I have done that. I thought setting white balance will fix it. Yes it will fix the nearby person. Then everything else in the background will look very orange.

This one struck my interest... Kind of what I was looking at building...

ok, i have to ask, has anyone found the barn doors on LED lights like this to be of any use?

if you own an LED light with barn doors, what % of the time do you actually use them?

LEDs seem to be more spot-focussed by nature and i've never run into a situation where i needed only a sliver of light from my on-camera light.

anyone?

heheh.. i never found the barn door any useful. I almost want to unscrew to remove them.

I think they're useless, even if you close them up on an LED light you never get a thin sliver of light... that's mainly because you have a lot of LED's and the surface of light is quite big, If you only had 1 LED then the barn doors would work like they do on other lights.

Then again if you want a little light on a specific spot, just lift the condenser lens a little bit and that should do it!

As far as I'm concerned the barndoors are mostly for show, or to protect the light lens once you pack them up on your camera bag!

Is the Zylight the only available remote controlled battery operated lights that are out there? I think I am going to get one of the comer's, but I keep feeling like I would just love to have the ability to remotely dim the light (or lights) I've never done it, but I am really feeling that this would be of great value at a wedding where I might have lights 8-12 ft. up in the air and want to dim it a bit but I have to bring it down to do it.

Any thoughts? on this ability?

Andy, just a side question.. what kind of light stand you use to host the light? Thanks

I have not tried using stands for lights at a reception but I know that a lot of guys are starting to now to get more artistic lighting that forms the face rather than just wash it with light from straight on (hence the thinking on using a stand or multiple stands). I have a couple of backdrop stands (bogen light stands) that will go up about 12 ft I think if I needed it.

I shot a wedding last weekend where my second cameraman had a swit led light on his camera and I intentionally left mine off. I got a really great look with his light coming in from a 90 degree angle. Of course the light was at camera level so I'm not sure exactly what it would look like at a higher angle? I may post a highlight reel that I did for that wedding in the samples area tomorrow.

I was thinking of mounting the light on a light stand. However, my concern is still, the light stand is not secure. It could tip over and someone trip over it. It will make me look bad.

I always shoot multiple cam. Now I have 2 Comers on second cam and 1 comer on the main cam. I can get good result like that too. Not all flat lighting. But I'm still considering getting a light stand for a comer light so the second cam won't be that heavily loaded.

you can get some of the 13 1/2 feet tall stands (those usually have a wider bottom spread) and only raise them to like 8 feet high... if you're really concerned about people tripping over them, just put a small sandbag pack at the bottom legs. I been using them for many years and never had a problem with people tipping them over. But is always a good idea to set them on a corner or next to the DJ light stands (like that they also think is one of his lights).
I been using the two comers on light stands and turning them on, and leaving them on for a looooong time. I just need to replace the battery once during the night!

Now if i could only have a remote control switch like i did in the past with other lights that would be great!

These are quite pricy. One of the smallest kits with the dimmer is around $1500?

How about the VidLED with an extension wire on the batteryback/dimmer? This way you can mount the battery and dimmer low on your stand.
