HMC150 and T1i in a video camera stabilizer dual

Hey all,

Here is a few example clips quickly put together for a video camera stabilizer.

I am rethinking the T1i and HMC150 combo, they don't really play nice together even at 720/30p. What you guys think?

Thanks -

looks like a well priced alternative to the fig rig and works the same. Not judging here, but I'm curious- how do you sell it without Bogen complaining?

It has proven a great alternative... They are similar looking but made out of totally different lightweight materials. Its good they have some healthy competition...

I dont get it. Why would this stabilze a cam?? Seems like it would bounce just like you were holding it. I saw no shots of you walking with it just pan shots.

Think about it, you are moving the focal point much further away from the hands. You are also able to hold the camera with 2 hands in a pretty natural position.

I think of it like holding a cup of coffee with 2 hands. You can be all careless and spill it everywhere pretty easily OR you can walk slower and allow you body and arms to absorb the shock. Most of us do this every morning and dont think much about it :)

No long walking shot examples, but in a few the camera op is taking a few steps - especially the last drum shot.

Its not for everyone, as is commonly stated about the figrig, but it sure is a big improvement over hand-held. Keep in mind, this wont beat a $3000+ vest/arm/sled system - it starts at only $119.

I personally use a 35lb vest/arm/sled, but most of the time I reach for a simple 2lb easy setup - Halo Rig HD.

does the Ti have less dynamic range than the hmc?
maybe it's just the lack of an ND filter on those outdoor shots where you used to Ti to film the hmc?

Yeah, for the outside shots - no ND filter... need to get a few.

I really cant put my finger on the difference of the 2 (besides the rolling shutter), it seems t1i is more saturated and crushed blacks a lot more. I also haven't really messed with the settings on the T1i.

you'll have to 'mess' with the settings on both to get them to match well.
i'm sure you can come pretty close.

I agree, but these would be hard to match regardless - different times days and locations...

Going to tinker more with it till I get a replacement C cam.

I thought about the Halo but bought the DVTech. I like it quite a bit, and it folds up into nothing. I can literally carry it in my camera bag, alongside the camera! folds open when needed. Great little addon. I'm sure the halo works, but I like the portability of the DVT.

As to the two camera differences, did you shoot both cameras outside??? Maybe I just didn't have enough coffee today, but I can't tell which shots you shot with which, unless the shots that you show you setting up for are the shots with the camera used. I.e. the outside dog shots were with the Panny, and the inside garage band was shot with the T1? You say you need to get some NDs, but the Panny have them built in. Does the T1 not?

While the outside shots were not as good as the inside, your lighting scenarios are so vastly different that I'd have to see the same thing shot by both cameras to know if it's the HMC or the T1. But I'm no expert...

I also use a DVtec, and so far it works great! and once i'm done i just fold it up and pack it! It's built in to the camera (i don't take it off) i have the quick release plate adaptor that allows me to mount it on a tripod with everything (no need to take the thing off)

I was just checking out the DV Tec web-site and they have some interesting new products for DSLR cameras. http://www.dvtec.tv/extreme.html

The Halo Rig HD looks interesting, specially since it doesn't have the fig rig price. but i just looks weird when you start to mount lights or other stuff on it. and how do you mount/dock that on a tripod? multiple quick releases?
I like it better than the figrig just because is flat on the bottom =)

Thanks for the opinion guys! Its pretty easy to tell what footage is what, they are shooting eachother in the shots. Outside is the T1i and no, unfortunately no built in ND filters. 150 for sure.

DVtec isn't cheap, I have used one, its really good rig. $300-$500 for those babies.

I also have a shoulder mount, varizoom... I cant say I use it much though, but when I do its good ol shoulder mount footage. Halo Rig brings a lot more flexibility to your shots, going low to high, panning or tilting - overall keeping a pretty steady shot.

Its not going to be the only thing you own for keeping a steady shot, but a tool you have available, and it cost around $100...

New UPDATE: Found a new camera thumb screw that also has a mount in the bottom to work with any 1/4" tripods and mounts.
