HMC "pin" noise ??

Are you ABBing every time you ower up? I just recently noticed this makes a diff. This cam does nto seem to retain it's ABB values once pwoered down.

I hope this link helps. While this is not as worse as some noise I am getting in other shooting conditions, this I feel shows my issue because it is under optimal conditions with lots of light. I am using an 1800 lux camera light to light this window pane. I have gain turned off and as I slowly close the iris you can see just before it is fully closed the noise that is produced(yes there is some compression from artifacts from youtube but the snow like noise is from the camera i see it on all the monitors I have tried). Is this normal for the camera or should i being getting a cleaner image than this? If this is normal can anyone explain the science behind why it happens?

Thanks for your help

This after another reset and black balance as well

I think it's normal. :(

Sadly, for my case, it looks great on the web or directly on to the HDTV screen via HDMI, but I would expect the occasion noise on my Korean HD LCD screen when played through a DVD.

Perhaps it's a different story altogether if you shoot with a hVX200. Despite the relative similarity between these 2 cams... Not too sure... oh well.

Is the Dynamic Range Stretch on? It isn't something to be left on all the time as it can make the picture noisy if there is nothing for it to do.

Best,

Jan

The HMC-150 does show very fine noise in many conditions, especially with standard scene file settings.

You have to tweak the settings, and especially the coring and sharpness as another poster said. Lots of threads on this.

There are also lots of variables in both causing and showing noise all the way from capture to what you are viewing the footage on.

The image is great when you get the camera tweaked to your liking. However, the next version of this camera does need an upgraded sensor, no doubt about it.

Jan, I think he said he was using 1080P30, so DRS would not be active, but that is yet another great point and variable.

I've only used the HMC150 once, last year. I haven't been able to afford a new camera.

However, I did notice a great amount of 'noise' in the dark areas of the shots I took.

I've been using Adobe On Location with my DVX100 and one of the monitor functions is 'histogram'. When I watch that monitor, even for a brief amount of time, I notice a lot of 'jumpiness' with the histogram, which I attribute to sensor/digitization noise.

If the HMC150 has a histogram function, you can probably obvserve the phenomenon as well (or use On Location or similar video monitor widgetry).

As for your tests... in the sample that I looked at... I didn't see 'noise' at all, with the exception of very briefly as you stopped down to 'rather dark'...

I'm looking into some 'denoising' software, which has been mentioned on one of these fora here, and unfortunately the name escapes me at the moment, but basically use that sort of software to 'clean up' this type of noise.

Thanks, I shot it as 1080 30p on the standrad scene file 1 so that could be my problem? I guess I wll try and play around with the scene file settings.

I'll double check to make sure the DRS is off, and I will focus on adjusting sharpness and coring.

Any other settings I should focus on?

Thanks So Much!

Maybe I'm wrong about this but you're going to see noise when you intentionally stop down your iris and allow very little light in to the camera.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think intentionally stopping down my iris would produce noise if my Gain was set to 0, i assumed it would just achieve a darker image but just as clean. Now if I was to electronically try to brighten trhe image (turning the gain on) then I would see noise.

It would make more sense to me if the "noise" I'm seeing is always there including when the gain is set to 0... it's just when I close my Iris it is more visible because of the the darker image.

Noise happens in the darker regions, the lower IRE levels. When you stop down your iris to make the image darker, you push your image down into the noisy mud area.

If you want cleaner images in those circumstances, shoot brightly, and then bring it down in post, and it'll be way way cleaner.

This is why I hate my HMC, everyone says the noise isn't there, But I swear against them, It looks terrible

Main reason why I sold my HMC151. The noise was driving me crazy. I couldn't believe it. I even compared my camera side by side with another HMC151 - same (bad) results. I ended up shooting with details all the way down, B-Press (sometimes Cine-V) gamma and sharpening in post if needed. Crushing the blacks helps, too. The in-camera sharpening seems to exaggerate the noise significantly imo.
