HMC-150 vs 5dmark II

thanks, good comparison...

Canon always has more crushed darks/blacks IMO. I bet the 155 was on standard scene file too...

Yes..true.. What you could really tell a diff was the shots where focus was on a closer subject. The DOF....film look.

Interesting, but too bad the lens lengths weren't given. As expected the bokeh of the 5D was better. I thought the water looked more organic in the 5D too.

Agreed.. I have the 7d..And I am really loving it. I havent picked up the HMC-150 in a month now. I also love how steady you can get video with the IS lenses.. Its pretty amazing actually.

You'd expect to see the 5d better the quality of the 150. But there are a few shortcomings when comparing the 2 cameras. According to the Canon specs (am I reading these wrong?) the 5d has a maximum clip size of 4GB. Canon maximum running time is 12 minutes. Would work fine for short clips but not a wedding or concert. Also wonder what a comparison of it against the P2 DVCPRO 4:2:2 would look like. I guess I stick with the right tool for the right job. If you are a still shooter looking for some short video, the Canon rocks, if you are shooting video, I'll take the run time, XLRs, zebras, etc. of the 'true' video camera, Panny or some other one over the 5d.

Until the day comes when they can combine the awesome technology of the Canon 5D/7D with the functionality of a video camera like the HMC (professional audio, shooting controls, better ergonomics, long record times, movable LCD screens), I'm sticking with a "video camera."

Heck, if and when that type of camera ever hits, I'm buying in a heart beat.

Besides the DOF the 150 doesn´t look that much "worse", I guess with a little CC the images would come very close "mojo-wise"...
When seeing edited VDSLR footage, I still try to remind myself though, that shooting and post will have been more complicated than with a videocamera.
I only WANT the look, but I NEED an easy, hazzle free workflow - HVX it still is for me...

the only real differences were dof (of course) and dynamic range.
the 5d had more range, handling highlights without clipping.
the dof difference could've easily been reduced if the operator had bothered to manually focus on the hmc and if they had taken the time to try to match the focal lengths better.

Seemed like the exposure was off in the 150 footage though. It also definitely didn't get processed to avoid the blowouts.

Had to turn the audio off since the Canon audio had such a high noise floor and it affected my impressions of the look. Yes, some of the blowouts could have been compensated for. That last shot of the sky over the roof also had wildly different settings and I would like to have known what they are, as that was probably the most revealing shot of the series. A little more ND for the Panasonic would have leveled things out a bit.
