HMC 150 Issues

so how do people with these cameras shoot a speech with 1 camera? most speeches or corporate events last more than 25 minutes.

Press red button, film event, press red button again. As previously stated, the camera doesn't stop recording when it reaches 4GB (unless you are using a 4GB card).

Personally, because I get a glitch at the file join in PH mode, I use the 17mbps mode instead, until I get FCS3.

See the last few posts in this thread:

The files can be pasted together seamlessly with a few lines at the command prompt.

I've been using HG mode to tape wedding formalities (ceremony & speeches) and it works beautifully because everything is covered before the 4GB/file limit :) Besides we record all audio to a separate digital recorder so there aren't really any continuity issues as long as you have some pick-up shots - when we shoot we think like a film makers not event videographers.

Not to be blunt but this does sound like user error. I routinely shoot sermons of 90 minutes at lenght and concerts lasting over 2 hours. I had intial issues with the older FCP so I captured via the intensity card... without a glitch and flawlessly transferred on the fly to whatever codec I have on my computer.

Now that FCP is up to par, I've probably recorded over 12 long form projects of over 2 hours without a glitch. THIS CAMERA ROCKS. It needs a bit of understanding but that's all. It's better than my HVX and I don't think that Panasonic owes you anything other than a possible sticky on the camera saying hey.. if you got no time to check things out.. atleast do the following and then list the key elements. These seems like more venting and being pissed at yourself and passing the buck..

Kind of like when I "accidentally" deleted a whole bunch of P2 cards because Panasonic made it so logical and easy to erase them.. I went through the roadblocks in the cam and deleted it much to a one second delayed "DOH" what did I do popped into my head.

you're right i should have bought the camera days earlier and spent a lot of time messing with it, but which of you professionals really ever have "extra time" for this?

Umm... ANY professional would do this. Or, rather, NO professional would go to a critical gig with untested equipment. If you've been reading all the threads here, you know there have been many discussions of workflow issues alone that would pretty much demand that you test the whole thing out before putting someone's concert recording on the line.

I tested my HVX for a two weeks before putting it into a critical situation, and even then used it as a second camera for a few gigs before ever using it alone. Further, after some failures in testing, I now test ever SDHC card thoroughly before putting it into use. Especially if you're recording live concerts, EVERYTHING needs to be tested first, and ideally have a backup.

P.S. I and others routinely shoot 2 hour clips with the HMC with no problem. The 4GB file size limit is a limit of the FAT32 filesystem, which is used by most consumer devices that use filesystems, and by P2 cards and many (most?) Windows computers. The ability to work with segmented files is a "norm" of the Windows world, and something done every day for many (most) IT-style video devices. Indeed, however, the HMC is a new camera with a bunch of new formats, and some NLEs have some issues. But your problem sounds like a badly-formatted or defective SDHC card.

Did you get the glitch with the file join using Final Cut 6.0.5?

Act like a professional then and come to the forums with questions and answers not whines and cries.

Sorry your recording didnt turn out like you planned.

Panasonic doesnt owe you anything.

There is nothing left to be said. Instead of complaining and moaning about everything that went wrong, (and believe me, I do sympathize), try asking questions and perhaps figuring out the cause or a reason instead of making claims that the camera is junk when clearly so many people have been happy so far.

I am using FCE ath the moment, not FCP. FCE, unlike FCP, has not been updated for compatibility with AVCCam. I intend to upgrade to FCS but it doesn't seem worth doing it until FCS3 comes out, hopefully this spring.

seems to be non problems in fcp with the joins. There were before and it was bad news. I'm hoping for native file editing on FCPS3- The data size savings would be huge. Pro Res is great but those mo fo's are big files.. I just used up 6 terrabytes on one project and it was mostly DVCPRO P2 files as the 150 was a mid project acquisition. If it were all 150, would have easily been 10 terrabytes or more.

So no reports at all the clarify the formatting in the camera issue.

It seems that to assist others, this should be clarified by the OP.

Sorry with what happened.

Noticed the header/subject line changed.

Hopefully, FCP3 will come out soon, but it would be great if they could just resolve it in their next 6.0.6 update.
