HMC 150 Issues

I can totally understand being p!ssed about the whole thing but I just think some testing before the shoot would have answered questions or shown any issue with the camera.

Check out the link I gave above.
It seems as if they recovered some "lost" footage.
I don't know if it will work for the OP who seems like a good guy just upset over this.
Try it. You have nothing to lose.

We are all here to learn and share but in the end we are on our own when we shoot...

I am very curious to see if his files are still there when he drops them on the laptop. I am willing to bet is footage is fine.

everything went well. yes, i was allowed to shoot from first row. no sound board...will get that later. they actually do a board recording mixed with a pair of mics on the stage.

yes, timecode kept ticking and the record symbol was on and the yellow light on the back of camera kept flashing.

what i did was to buy TMPGEinc (sp?) and converted files to .wmv with that. i watched the wmv files when i got back to the room. unless that conversion program is a piece o crap then i'd say there are missing files.

VLC, which is free, will play MTS files straight from the card.

And Mike, several people has asked directly whether you formatted the 32 GB card before shooting any footage.

It would be revealing to learn whether you did.

i did format it the second day after having filled it the first day and transfering off the files from the first day.

thanks for the tip on the free encoder. i tried a couple free ones, but they didn't work as well as the pay one and most of the other free ones put up a bug/logo on the footage so those were useless. i will check out hat one you suggested.

once this project is done (and prolly sooner) i will be returning this camera so until i buy another .mts camera i probably won't need a new program.

agreed. i did try to test the camera as much as i could. i received the camera about 2 hours prior to leaving for the gig. i shot footage which i messed around with, but certainly did not roll for a 3 hour period to see if there were problems. you're right i should have bought the camera days earlier and spent a lot of time messing with it, but which of you professionals really ever have "extra time" for this? this is why i spent a lot time asking questions on here, reading other threads on here and read the manual 1 time online and 2 times when i got it.

As I read the responses, it seems that while there are issues with any cam, most here haven't had anything similar to yours.

The 4GB limit is a FAT32 limiter, and is used for all SSD video acquisition, I believe, whether SxS, p2 or SDHC. Even the Firestore formats in a FAT32 format.

You might have had a bad card or bad cam. But the cam doesn't suck in my view, and so many here that love its visuals and workflow.

It easily bests our HVX200 and compares so well with our 170

Hope things work out

Mikeymic, on the SDHC card, follow the following path:

Private>AVCHD>BDMV>Stream>

How many .MTS files are in the Stream folder? Those are you footage files (though you need the whole folder intact to play them). They should be sequentially numbered 0000, 0001, 0002, etc.

Also, have you tried putting the camera in playback mode and playing them back from camera itself?

Also, because you aren't clear... did you format the card before or after you "lost" the footage?

oh oh oh, after i lost the footage? i did after the first night, but i transfered that whole structure starting with the "private" folder.

so how do people with these cameras shoot a speech with 1 camera? most speeches or corporate events last more than 25 minutes.

To clarify:

1. You shot the footage on Day 1 with a SDHC 32 GB card that WAS NOT formatted in the cam;

2. That card was transferred and some clips are missing;

3. Then you formatted the card in the cam and shot the second day

4. And that footage ALL is there?

Is that correct?

I can shoot continuous for as long as I have available space -- with a 32 GB Panasonic card, I believe it is 180 minutes at 720 PH.

You said that you formatted the card after the first day. You said that you lost footage on the second session. Was the second session on the first day or the second day? We aren't mind readers. We don't know the whole process of how you got from point A to point B.

When you formatted the card, was that before or after you "lost" your footage?

Are all of the .MTS clips in the PRIVATE folder? How big is the PRIVATE folder? 4gig? 8gig? 12, 16,?

Have you attempted to play back the footage from the camera? If so, are all the clips there?

As I stated, I record 75-90 minutes non-stop every week in PH mode without missing a frame. As has been stated repeatedly, when the file limit is reached, it just starts a new clip automatically. Nothing is lost in the process.

Please stop assuming that your experience is the only experience. I have done similar stuff and never encountered what you have, nor have the other users. Which means that either the card is defective, the camera is defective, or you simply screwed up.

Hey Mike I'm not trying to come down on you but when I moved from my FX1 to my 150 as my main camera I tested as much as I could.
3 hour recording?
Heck no but I did know what happens once a single recording session hits 4 gigs on a FAT32 formatted card.

It sounds like you did what you thought was right but the only trouble I have with all of this is the fact that you seem to want to say the camera is bad or that we have somehow failed you.

I'm willing to bet that neither is/was the case.

At this point I will only reply to this thread IF I have something positive to add.

Again I will say I hope it works out for you because I have been in your shoes before.
Not with the 150 however...

The title is bombastic.

It would be equally if not more accurate to say This Particular HMC150 USER SUCKS!

Your points are well taken but it is really incumbent upon you to know your gear and maximize it's use.

Just be thankful you weren't just winging it with a new parachute!

Hi Mike,

I'm sorry you are having problems with missing footage.

I played around with the camera for two weeks before using it on a paid gig. I learned about the 4 GB file llimit size and asked questions on this board, to which I was given answers. I tested the answers to make sure they worked, and they did.

As a professional, I would never shoot with a new pieces of gear before testing it to simulate the shooting environment. I owe that to my clients. My business name and brand are too important to use a new piece of gear on a paid gig 2 hours after it arrives.
