For editing wedding videos would it be better to have more disc space or use raid 1? To be honest, I don't know how much disc space a typical wedding will take up. There may be better ways than others to safeguard data, I just don't know. I back up my still wedding images on a seperate HD and make a DVD of the RAW files as well. What do you guys do for video?

I use the Lacie Rugged Drives cause they're pretty durable and I can bring them around with me everywhere.. then I dump all my footage onto a large desktop Lacie drive.

:bath:

Right now I use a 320gb one.. it's working completely fine for me so far in terms of space but in retrospect I probably should have gotten the 500gb rugged drive to have more room to play.

for my media drive I have two 640GB 7200rpm (make sure you get 7200 or faster) in raid 0 for speed, as you'll want your data access to be as fast as possible for your NLE, especially if you're editing AVCHD. Since its raid 0 this gives me about a 1200GB media drive.

for my backup I have a 1TB drive where i keep the original PRIVATE folders from shoots. Hopefully i wont fill those up anytime soon, so i can continue to archive within my PC, but im sure eventually when they do fill up ill have to buy a blu-ray drive to burn the archived footage to disc. not sure if that's the best method for archive though.

There are good articles on this online, just google something about HDD (hard drive disc) raid for video.

Thank you Shawn!

I would say definitely get a good sized drive but don't "make sure you get 7200 or faster" because that's not a silver bullet.

I'll take a Seagate 12 series drive @ 5900rpm with 32MB cache over any number of 7200rpm drives, there's a lot more that goes into hard drive speed and performance than just rotational speed.

If you REALLY want to go crazy, depending on project size, get yourself a solid state drive. An intel x-25 is only 80 gigs, but if you only use it for your current project and only drop in clips after doing your off the line, you will have a drive that's faster than the cable it's hooked up with.

if you are serious about working hd, i think u should opt for raid 0 . For protection, raid 0 + 1.
If u have more cash, raid 5 is the way to go

Be sure to plan big and provide for a backup. Once you have deleted the files from your SDHC cards for the next shoot, the hard drives are all you have. You need to take maximum safeguards at least until the project is delivered.

A typical 2 camera HMC-150 wedding shoot with 4ish hours of footage is only 30 to 50 GB. But if you have to render any uncompressed footage, like when you run a de-shaker script, my directory for the event easily gets up to 100 GB.

I would run a 1 TB or a 2 TB drive internally with an external backup drive of equal capacity to act as a mirror. I get a performance drive as the working drive and the cheapest drive I can for the backup. When I consider them to be full, Im currently retiring both drives as an identical matched set for redundancy. As drives get bigger, Im going to have to work out a plan for consolodating the drives while retaining redundancy.

Also, the new Seagate ST32000641AS 2TB XT is supposed to sustain 140MBs read speeds. It may be a good large performance drive. Still a bit expensive so far.
