Highlight Tone Priority necessary with custom Picture Style?

If I'm using a custom picture style to boost latitude like the ones floating around, should I keep Highlight Tone Priority (HTP) turned on or should I turn it off?
 
One thing about using highlight tone priority, although it does boost your lows and crush your highs a bit, by basically stopping your camera down but boosting the lower exposures, if you are already using a curve that is doing so, you may be boosting the lows far too much.

what I have noticed is that you will begin getting vertical bands going through areas of the image that are lower in exposure. and it's not pretty.
