High speed, slow motion cameras

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knew of any new high speed cameras that are coming to the market? I need something that is shooting around 500fps, but I'm not looking to shell out the cash for the Phantom. I would rent it, but due to the place that I live, the short notice for our shoots and the regularity that we'll need it, it looks like it will be better to buy it.

Maybe someone that went to NAB knows saw something that looks interesting?

The cameras that I've already found are;

http://ts3cine.com/features/ - This camera from Fastec looks super nice, but is still $30,000. Could be an option though

http://www.megaspeed.ca/ - I can't find too much on this camera from Mega Speed, and the website is pretty crappy. But it looks like a potential at $16,000

Just to be clear, I don't want to know about the Casio consumer cameras. The res just isn't enough for me. If anyone's got any info on the i-speed, I appreciate it, as I can't find too much on the internet.

Any others? Would be good to know :)

The GH2 with the hack and 720p @ 60 FPS is the best you are going to get for under $1000. Otherwise the Red cameras are your next best options at about 10x-50x the price.

Depending on what the slow motion is something like Twixtor and the GH2 might work just as well as the high speed cameras. Rumors say that the GH3 will offer 1080p @ 60 FPS. That should be nice.

I have a GH2 and an EX1, so I'm already shooting at 60p. But I don't really regard that as highspeed shooting. It's true that you can get slow motion out of 60p, but that's not what it was intended for and only slows things down to 50%. Which is cool, but not what I'm looking for.

I have been using twixtor a lot this year, but you have to be extremely selective as to where it's used, otherwise it ends up looking super weird. It's a powerful tool in the right places, but the software dictates where it can be applied.

Vision Research has some other cameras other than the Phantom that are more in the price/performance range with the ones you found.

I think you get basically SD at 500fps at their low end vs. the HD of the Phantom, but you don't get the silly small frame sizes of the casio.

Yeah I looked at the cheapest Phantom at $10,000. Although it's within my price range, I concluded that it's not really worth the money. It records in 4:3 and is SD at the minimum frame rate.

I think the megaspeed is still the best camera for money based on the specs, but for the life of me, I can't find any good example videos on the internet and the website is super hard to understand. In fact, the specs on the site don't correlate to the specs on the video from NAB.

I guess I'll call them.

If anyone know of any other high speed camera systems for less than $20,000, post it here please.

FS100 has a sharpy-SD function in 120fps... meh. High-speed 1080p is still a luxury. Unless you're gonna do Extensive stuff why not just rent it... few would justify the costs of such a camera atm.

Hi Martin,

Renting is not an option where I live and for the work that I do, hence the reason I need to buy it. I live in the mountains and make snowboard films, so we can often decide to shoot literally 8 hours before the first frame is shot. The closest place is Munich and the rental fees are out of my league (Phantom Flex). However, it is a luxury and not totally necessary, but would put the icing on the cake.

Oh well, looks like two options. I'm still gunning for the ts3cine.

Does anyone else keep seing weird color rendition in fastec slow mo footage? :Drogar-Shock(DBG): I keep thinking I see this 'rainbow' like effect on every demo video they have... is it just me? I don't know why it's in every video I see

How big of an image sensor? What is your maximum price? I assume you want 1080p?

You can always look into Industrial cameras. There is one by a company called Adimec that can do 340fps at 1080p, but it uses an interface called CoaXpress.
