High ISO speed noise reduction

Sorry if this has been discussed at length but then my searching skills need improving. Doing some quick tests why wouldn't I want to leave High ISO speed noise reduction at strong all the time? I don't seem to be getting a plastic look but then again I haven't done many tests. Any advice?

Well...Neat Video, if overdone, will give that plastic look. But when done correctly is perfect (without losing any perceived detail). But the problem with Neat video is that it takes way too long to render (seriously long). So if using this feature in camera can provide the same type of results...then I'm game.

well it stands to reason that the camera would have a better "knowledge" of what is being added and what ISO it is on than the "guessing" that Neat Video does when you give it an area to sample. I too get good results with Neat Video but my preliminary tests using this camera setting is getting none of that plastic look and a substantial reduction in noise.

Now the question is what does this do in lower ISO settings or is it smart enough to know to do nothing.

Edit: upon further tests I don't see much reduction happening in video mode...at least nothing that can do anything like Neat Video

Unless someone can post some evidence, I'm pretty sure this is a photo only feature and does not affect clips captured in "movie mode".

Yeah, I concluded the same thing. When I first started this thread I had only done a test with a still.

Yeah its a very good noise reduction plugin. You should have some kind of noise reduction tool for when you have to shoot at high ISO and need to remove some of the noise.
