High contrast AVCHD blocking, the "Sony needs to fix this" issue. 7Q to the rescue!

I don't know about Sony needing to fix it, because Convergent Design has.

Left is the AVCHD from the SD card, right is the ProRes file from the 7Q (4KtoHD mode). This is a portion of a shot, blown up to 200%.

Obviously there is a gamma shift going on here, which CD is aware of and will address. But I can't believe the amount of detail and sharpness in the 7Q ProRes footage. Even more importantly, this was a major flaw with footage coming out of the FS700 which now appears to be a worry of the past for those of us with the Odyssey7Q.

Even with all of the cameras being announced at NAB right now, I'm pretty damn happy with my investment in the FS700+7Q. Thanks again to CD and everyone involved with the 7Q for breathing new life into my camera!

Great!
Damn I wish I could afford a 7Q. If I sell my EA50, I could just about swing it. But then I'd have an 7Q with no FS700 raw license or CD SSD. And no 18-200PZ lens. ;)

I know! the 4K and 4K2HD 7Q image is so clean. No moire, no aliasing, no jagged edges. So RAD! :)

Convergent just killed it!

CD really knocked it out of the park with the 7Q! Even with all of the cameras announced at NAB, I didn't see anything that could give the fs700+CD combo a run for its money. They added another 2-3 years to the life of this camera easily.

Sony really needs to send the CD team to Tahiti  Curious if Mitch could answer a question I have. Is your agreement with Sony and the fs700 exclusive?

That looks like an incredible difference. I'll be interested to see a comparison once the gamma issue is sorted. Out of interest, is the 4KtoHD prores file just the same as editing with a standard prores HQ file? Also, what's the highest frame rate you can run in 4KtoHD?

Yeah, the gamma shift is a bit of a bummer. The highest framerate right now I believe is 30fps to ProRes. I tried putting the camera in 4K 60fps and the 7Q's ProRes setting said "Not supported". I believe higher frame rates will be supported in future updates. I'd love to roll 60fps straight to ProRes.

I'm looking forward to compressed 4K, although depending on the project, this 1080p ProRes might still be my go-to. There is still a little ways to go on the 7Q in terms of playback control, LUT control, etc, but it's getting there. This recent firmware definitely got it out of the "just a fancy monitor" woods.

Improvements are forever on the way. Some sooner than later. ;-)

ProRes is ProRes. Currently up to 30p, later up to 60p.

Not going to comment on business relationship between Sony & CD.

Also would LOVE to see other Prores' like LT etc. with higher compression for shooting events and live gigs etc.

Well, the combination of the announced Sony A7s and the Atomos Shogun look to be another really good combination.

I am coming from the still side of the pond, and doing more video all the time, so I understand that reading larger photosites (so there is no aliasing, etc.) will make a very good (but dedicated) camera, dedicated to video that is, so I feel this is a smart move on Sony's part and I probably have to have one. Convergent Design has said that they will support it, so I won't need the Shogun, hopefully.

There is a lot of negative chatter about this camera, but I will bet (like my money) that this approach will give a wonderful image.
