FS7: High contrast aliasing

I thought it would be worth sharing that the sensor/compression is still exhibiting signs of weird blockiness and aliasing in areas of high contrast (mostly with diagonal lines) on 4K XAVC-I

100% Crop video

The metal piece is sort of a "K" shape, if you look at the underside of the top diagonal, you'll see the artifacts.

This was also on the FS700, but was virtually eliminated when using RAW out and recording ProRes on the Odyssey7Q. I assume we'll get similar (clean) results when using the Extension Unit.

Can anyone with an F5 or F55 see this issue when recording to XAVC-I ?

I've not yet tested mine in a similar manner yet.

There is no image to look at.
click the link "100% crop video".

This was CineEI mode, Slog3, XAVC-I. I was shooting a project so I wasn't using XAVC-L mode (and couldn't stop everything to say "Let me change modes to test something...")

From a DVX post on October 18th 2013 I posted this:

I saw this exact same thing on the F3 and it was never fixed. Thread that documented it: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...elapse&p=1986281698&viewfull=1#post1986281698

Then when the F5/F55 was released it was also apparent on the first shipment of cameras and initial footage that hit the web. It was documented here, http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...lease)&p=1986286368&viewfull=1#post1986286368 and later nofilmschool wrote about it and referenced my post from DVX http://nofilmschool.com/2013/03/sony-f5-f55-firmware-fix-shipping-bhphoto/

At least with the F5/F55 Sony immediately addressed it. Perhaps because I posted it on their virgin forum and it got their immediate attention - but with the FS700 I wonder if they will be quick to act.

On a side note, what I found worked on the F3 to reduce the ugly artifacting was to go into the custom picture profile and under MATRIX change it to the "FL MODE". This seemed to help a bit.

Many of the Sony's had some initial issues with edges, on the F3 it was never addressed. On the F5/F55 it was quickly addressed with firmware. I'm not sure if on the FS700 it was ever addressed, but I somewhat suspect that on the FS7 they will probably try to address it if possible with the next firmware update - given the camera is all the rage and shipping right now.

I certainly hope this gets addressed quickly. I don't fancy having to lug an external recorder around to elevate this problem.
That one of the main reasons behind my FS7 purchase.

This is quite worrying :(

I won't be able to test until Monday when I get back into the office.

Looking forward to other users comments if they are experiencing the same?

As far as the F3 goes no shot have been ruined by aliasing in highlights shooting in s-log (frankly I've never seen it) but I had some issues with my FS100 showing something similar and also more extreme.

It was suggested on the FS700 thread, but could it be speedbooster, lens, etc.. other stuff like that?
I believe this was my Zeiss 50mm f/1.4, closed down to about f/2 to avoid the highlight blooming the lens has. On a Nikon dumb adapter, so no additional glass in between.

I've shot quite a bit on the FS700 (with and without the 7Q) and this issue has popped up with a variety of lenses and adapters.

I don't think this is a result of a lens, adapter, etc, considering that it doesn't happen on the FS700 while using the 7Q. It's a sensor+compression issue.

Very good point, the issues I documented on the F3 were NOT when the camera was in slog, it was only when using any of the cinegammas. I had bad yellow fringing around very bright sources of light, particularly the sun during sunset shots. Swapping the matrix usually fixed it,.. but again, I was not an avid slog shooter back then so Ossulnd is correct to say that in slog mode the F3 never had this kind of problem.

Thanks for providing the clarity, I hate for anyone to be misinformed.

That is excellent to provide the clarity on that, you never know if someone is using some crazy homebrew contraption and then later realizes it was only in their setup the issues surfaced.

Soon enough I'm quite sure someone else will test the FS7 for similar issue, and if so, it will get back to Sony very fast I'm quite certain. Just contact the folks at nofilmschool.com - they will be happy to publish initial camera faults which can help gain more attention and traction by Sony.

My 55 does this if you squint and look for it. All modes, except for possibly raw.

Hardly ever pops up so I haven't felt the need to complain loudly about it.

BTW, this is NOT the same issue that got vocal posts at the end of February 2013 on firmware 1.0 for the 5/55. That issue was WAY worse, and was fixed to the level it's at now in FW 1.01

I remember a few days ago someone mentioned seeing greenish aliasing when shooting against bright white. I can't remember who, but I guess someone else got the same issue.

I see a lot of footage make with FS7 and yes there is a aliasing hightlights "issue" like FS700.
This morning I have spoken with prime support Europe and they have told me that this is a caracterist of signal process and the name of this is "tearing".
This can't be solved with firmware update.
It's a really pity, I understand it...
