Couple of quick questions - What is everyone using for an EVF? Be really great to have something shoe mounted / EVF as a loupe generally connects at the tripod mount and makes it difficult to quickly free up room to use the OVF for stills shooting.

Secondly - My firmware appears to be 1.20. Is there a cumulative list of updates to the latest version / I shoot with EF glass only - any real reason to send it off to Canon for the upgrade?

Lastly - I see that in Cinema log I cannot even hit the AF button to quickly pull focus. If I switch back to EVF mode then I'm using the less accurate PDAF - I prefer to focus initially in live view. I have C-log setup in my quick menu to disable/enable, but is there any other workaround? That kind of blows.

Thanks!
Shawn

LCDVFe is the best choice, then alphatron. Remember anything connected to the 1D C HDMI port has 250ms delay, this is caused by the camera itself.

latest firmware is 1.3.9, there are couple of fixes, i recommend updating since it's free of charge.

No AF in Clog, 4k and s35, manual focus is the way to go.

Wait, what? When shooting video in any of those modes, can you use One Shot AF to get quick focus before hitting record? If not, that seems bloody ridiculous - considering every other Canon DSLR can, but not their flagship DSLR.

If you're in Canon Log Mode, here's what is locked out:
ISO 400-6400 only
No AF
No Auto-ISO - Canon Log is truly full M mode only. Which sucks sometimes - if you're shooting a scene with drastically changing light, like following a bride and groom out of a church - there's no way to do this in C-Log mode unless you're using a strong variable ND filter and could adjust it on the fly.

There's a time and place for Canon Log, and a time not to use it. I think I'm mostly going to shoot portrait mode dialed back (0 sharpness, -2 contrast, -1 saturation, +2 picture). This way I can let the camera ramp the ISO up and down and keep good exposure in challenging lighting conditions, post work is faster (for me) and I can do a pre-AF before a shot.
However - if I were going to set a static scene where the light doesn't change I'd probably shoot Canon Log for the absolute best dynamic range.

Portrait does have the best skin tone colour (and it can't be replicated in post), but at the expense of more chroma noise (red channel) compared to C-Log, while C-Log has the widest DR and more pleasing noise. I feel shooting people with Dialed Down Portrait and everything else (wides, landscapes, objects) with C-log is the way to go for my next shoot.

About Auto ISO, can I let the camera control exposure just by alternating ISO? and if so, how? Perhaps Manual Mode and Auto ISO? and how does the ISO shifting occur, smoothly or in hard stops?

Would love to have smooth Auto ISO on the next shoot.

Whats that about anyways? What does Canon log do that prevents autofocus, auto iso or snapping a photo? I don't know of any video enhancements made in any of the firmware updates.

I just sold my a7s that I purchased last October. I loved the 1080p footage and the low light, but I constantly had failures with the Metabones IV even on the latest firmware. I love that I can put all my most used settings all in one page on the Canon, and the custom memory settings are TRUE memory settings. One the a7s I couldn't even set things like APS-C mode or electronic shutter to a memory bank. So fiddly that little camera. While the 1dc has dropped quite a bit in 2 years, the a7s is now around $1700 in less than a year. I had to unload it as you know Sony is going to release a ver II that shoots 4k internally.

I used the cheap commlite adapter and it worked great with canon glass, but not my sigma art lens.... I like the internal 4K and different formats to shoot with...

I haven't checked my 1DC and I never use Clog so I'm just throwing some things out. In 4K and S35 modes, the camera is unable to snap photos due to the fact that the sensor is being used in a crop mode, or at least that is my guess. There is also no falloff or aberration correction going on, probably due to processor requirements. As far as auto iso in Clog, I'm not sure how it would work since AutoISO was programmed to get correct exposure for a nonlog profile. Canon would need to redesign Auto ISO for the 1DC in Clog mode and I doubt they felt like putting in the time. Autofocus may be a problem due to the face that the AF uses contrast detection and Clog may be using some of the same processor to readjust for a much lower contrast. I know I have a real hard time determining focus in Clog.

I always loved the images from this camera.

Is Canon really done supporting it? Because that frustrates me and I don't even own one, haha.

They could have done so much with it...

Quite agree with you, Manual focus is very difficult on get right on camera, I actually missed focused with a 11-24L. I would recommend a 7" monitor for monitoring with the different focus assistance build in.

I guess no falloff or aberration correction is because it use the lens crop so it never need to see the image on the side where aberration occur most likely?

In your case I would have bought the cheap commlite adapter or the DEC adaptor, + the A7RII

Anyway welcome to the Canon orphan club.

I am thinking of getting the A7Rii + 28-135 or a USRA mini 4.6 as a B cam after using the 1DC for 30 months.

Joined the 1DC club as well. Bought it in lieu of the C300MK2 (putting off this purchase until next year) and as a B-cam to my C100mk2 (for clog). When shooting in 4K, would a smallhd 502 work connected via HDMI? It may be a silly question though I'm not sure if it needs a 1080 signal in order to work. I figure putting it on the hotshoe for exposure and focus, even with the small frame delay, solves most of my DSLR woes. I find it weird going back to a DSLR after years on the 7D/5D2/5D3. ;)
