Hi, I'm J, I sold my GH1 and I regret it.

Hi thought I'd start a little rant and comfort zone for people who suffered buyer remorse and then it's sequel of seller remorse. cos i know i'm not the only one.

here is my story, I waited years to get my first SLR for stills - firstly having my eye on the Canons 450D then then 500D then the 550D, just so you know how long i delayed myself. during all this on the side however, i did alot of video work as a student also film making and even some paid gigs.

when the news of the GH1 reached me i was ecstatic that someone with brains was able to put some serious video functionality into an SLR, still i waited for many months and looked online at images and praise reviews for many months, because i wanted to buy my first SLR and i wanted to do it right .

In Feb this year i bought the GH1 for $2220 (I live in Aus/PAL land and yes our prices are crazy, this is about 2x the price you see online in US) i was mostly please with it loved the interface, the size and weight, and the kit lens. I took all that for granted.

After strutting it around a bit for a month, rubbing shoulders in the cannon and Nikon world of photographers, who just cant comprehend any other brand as a great hybird package, i developed buyer remorse and wanted to get rid of it. I tried to return it to the store which then would only refund like 75% even though it is a few weeks used. So I made an ebay account (never tried ebay) just to get rid of it, and did so for about $1888 then realised that I had to pay like $100 in Ebay sales fee and paypal fee (and ebay owns paypal? so i just paid the twice) anyway that works out to be the same as how much I would have got if just got the store refund.

all that Headache aside I thought to myself, what was I thinking, the GH1 is twice the price of a 550D, I quickly bought a Canon 550D for $1.2k and even registered it for 3 year 3rd party warranty. but as soon as i got it out of the box and into my hand.... I had both buyer remorse and seller remorse.
it felt bulky and the interface was stupid and thoughtless, the non electric viewfinder while cool is practically useless for manual focus, and the plastic fantastic 18-55 kit lens was just meh.

anyway I considered it an okay trade off since my GH1 was overpriced, and im getting better stills at half the price. I used the 550D whenever I could for stills and it has served me quite well (supposedly it is better for stills at 18mp etc), though i know the GH1 would have served me better with all its features. when the Gh13 hack was out i kicked myself hard... and here I am, I want a Gh1 back.
I wish i could have tried them before i would buy them but i had to rely mostly on online reviews, which i read plenty of.
The lesson learned here was... I don't know... trust your force. And dont look down when others look down on you and your gear.

anyone want to trade xD.

Oh bummer.

Here's my story ...all comes to those who wait, but i paid the price.

Also an Aussie, went to Harvey norman to buy the 550D when it first came out but the stock was delayed (even though they had a full page ad in the paper) so hopped in the car disgusted and jumped on the iphone and rang another retailer. Bloody copper jumped me at the lights, no seat belt, talking on the phone and old rego label still on the car. $851 dollars worth of fines and 13 demerit points accumulated. There goes the 550D moolah. Spewin'' went home swearing never to buy another camera and then the GH1 Hack comes on the scene. Picked up a body only $899 from Camera Action house in Melb, full Pana warranty and hacked the gorgeous little thing. Regretting not buying the kit lens and will get it in NY in August when i'm there, but have FD's and happy with them.

Man go buy one, flog the bloody 550D. join the club.

Cheers Rambo

Did you buy your GH1 from DCW? And sell it on ebay around about March/April?

Because I think I own it now...

I was about to pull the trigger on a 550d and a z-finder which would've added up to about $1800 - the upper limit of my buget. Then I saw a GH1 pop up on ebay and snagged it up excitedly. With all the excitement over the hack I am now so happy with my decision!

I haven't hacked it yet but I'm watching the progress closely and plan on doing just as soon as I get some faster cards (I'm currently using class 4's). It's been a fun camera to play around with, but I haven't done anything serious with it yet - however in November I'm off to the surfing Mecca of Hawaii's North Shore for the 4th year in a row, and it'll be going with me. The past few years I've had my FX7 over there but this time I will have the GH1 along with 4-5 lenses and a matte box with some filters. I'll hack it before I go over to make it a NTSC version so I can hand 24p footage to guys over there, then when I get home I'll just re-conform it to 25p for my own use.

I can't be happier w/ my GH13...
And now that I received my Novoflex adapter and can get back in touch with my old Nikon primes...OMG.... it's bloody addictive!!!

A Happy Camper In Switzerland :love4:

Dude, I don't even want to know how you found this lol....

sure the patch has improved the camera but it was shooting fantastic footage back then when you had it which is probably rubbing more salt in your wounds =) I got mine in Melb back in October for what I thought was a good price of 2.2k when everyone was trying to flog it for 2.5-2.8k and had to wait for it. when they did finally deliver it they only allocated i think 6 or 12 for the whole of australia, some ridiculous number. I had a mate in a store that made sure to put one aside for me. was this close to getting one from singapore for a fraction less than what I bought with postage and customs tax. I wouldnt hesitate buying a second body when the time comes.

@deltoidjohn

yup, that would be you, just matched your ebay name lol.
I guess at least I know that that particular GH1 is being well taken care of and going on such fancy adventures.

lets be friends, and you keep me up to date with what she sees xD.

Now that you mentioned it, was it just me or the GH1 also does not complain about shooting video on class4 cards (with default unhacked settings)? 550D stops about half the time even on a class 6. :badputer:

Yahoo all the Aussie GH13's in one thread...

Deltoidjohn, i remember bidding against you for that Gh1, you snatched it at the last few seconds.

Gh1, 550D, 5D, or pinhole camera made from a shoe box, that track says it all.
