Hi thought I'd start a little rant and comfort zone for people who suffered buyer remorse and then it's sequel of seller remorse. cos i know i'm not the only one.
here is my story, I waited years to get my first SLR for stills - firstly having my eye on the Canons 450D then then 500D then the 550D, just so you know how long i delayed myself. during all this on the side however, i did alot of video work as a student also film making and even some paid gigs.
when the news of the GH1 reached me i was ecstatic that someone with brains was able to put some serious video functionality into an SLR, still i waited for many months and looked online at images and praise reviews for many months, because i wanted to buy my first SLR and i wanted to do it right .
In Feb this year i bought the GH1 for $2220 (I live in Aus/PAL land and yes our prices are crazy, this is about 2x the price you see online in US) i was mostly please with it loved the interface, the size and weight, and the kit lens. I took all that for granted.
After strutting it around a bit for a month, rubbing shoulders in the cannon and Nikon world of photographers, who just cant comprehend any other brand as a great hybird package, i developed buyer remorse and wanted to get rid of it. I tried to return it to the store which then would only refund like 75% even though it is a few weeks used. So I made an ebay account (never tried ebay) just to get rid of it, and did so for about $1888 then realised that I had to pay like $100 in Ebay sales fee and paypal fee (and ebay owns paypal? so i just paid the twice) anyway that works out to be the same as how much I would have got if just got the store refund.
all that Headache aside I thought to myself, what was I thinking, the GH1 is twice the price of a 550D, I quickly bought a Canon 550D for $1.2k and even registered it for 3 year 3rd party warranty. but as soon as i got it out of the box and into my hand.... I had both buyer remorse and seller remorse.
it felt bulky and the interface was stupid and thoughtless, the non electric viewfinder while cool is practically useless for manual focus, and the plastic fantastic 18-55 kit lens was just meh.
anyway I considered it an okay trade off since my GH1 was overpriced, and im getting better stills at half the price. I used the 550D whenever I could for stills and it has served me quite well (supposedly it is better for stills at 18mp etc), though i know the GH1 would have served me better with all its features. when the Gh13 hack was out i kicked myself hard... and here I am, I want a Gh1 back.
I wish i could have tried them before i would buy them but i had to rely mostly on online reviews, which i read plenty of.
The lesson learned here was... I don't know... trust your force. And dont look down when others look down on you and your gear.
anyone want to trade xD.
