hi guys.... i am purchasing an LCD to mount on my 7D so my question is... does the LCD have to be full HD or can it be SD? and if its ok to use a SD LCD, would it run slower because its not HD? thank you....

Hey Bud,

I shot a short on the 5D and 7D and I had purchased the Ikan V8000HDMI 8" HD monitor thinking it would work with the cameras, but I came to realize that the 5D and 7D and T2i do not output an HD video signal through the HDMI out connection, so all I got on my HD monitor was a smaller SD image , so I guess im saying as of right now there is no need to get an HD monitor for those cams because you will only get 480p out of them anyways, maybe in the future they will somehow get full HD signal out of them but right now , not happening.

so if you bought a nice 5-7" SD monitor that would work pretty good.

any body have any other suggestions or thoughts.

Regards,
Matt R.

The 5D only outputs HD when not recording. It outputs an SD image that is distorted while recording. You can use the camcorder output on the camera to send an SD signal to an SD monitor, yes.

The Lilliput 7" HDMI/SD monitor is the absolute best value in my opinion.

.

The 7D and the 1D Mark IV both output an HD image WHEN RECORDING via HDMI. The t2i/550D and 5D don't. All of the cams output an HD image when NOT recording. The output is a bit cropped and has grey bars top and bottom. I believe it is a 1080i signal - at least that is what my small HD monitor sees it as. For me the HD output is great for achieving accurate focus.

For follow focus when recording the advantage is with the 7D and 1D mark IV becasue they keep the signal HD when recording. the t2i and 5D switch to a downconverted 480 image when you hit the record button.

Hope this info helps.

What does the 7D put out through HDMI? Would it be worth it to pick up, say, one of the new SmallHD DP-SLR monitors for pulling focus?

I'll never buy a thousand dollar onboard monitor again unless they get drastically improved. The $250. Lilliput 7" monitor, comparatively speaking, is WAY better than the $1K monitors.

I have a Marshall 7" HDMI and I bought it for one reason only. Peaking. It is very helpful in keeping the focus where you want it while recording, which compensates for the lousy 480p output. It also has false color, so you can quickly tell if you are overexposing. Since the monitor can also be calibrated, you can review the footage in HD, which means that technically you could use it for grading on the road...

yoclay, is this the one or similar to what you have? Marshall has a good reputation, I'd pay the price if I knew it was worth it. Markers, false colors, peaking....all those things are worth it to me vs. some $200 monitor that is designed for gaming/pimp my ride applications.

I need a new monitor and would love suggestions, keep this thread alive!

thats the monitor i use. I love it, the peaking and false color are worth it alone, it helps me forget i'm shooting on a still camera:grin:

I have a Marshall and HATE it. I have a Panasonic and love it. CHris I hope your right I ordered the monitor you suggested. Heck, at the price I will try anything.

You mean the 8.4" Panasonic unit? I've used it and it is the shizznit, but mucho expensivo. I'm afraid I'm a little underwhelmed so far by the $1K offerings. For 1/4 the cost, the Lilliput in my opinion is money better spent. By the way, I got the Ikan hood and it fits perfectly.

Thanks Chris,

Yes I am talking about the 8.4 Panasonic, I also have a 17 inch for video village. They are fantastic but as you said, "way expensive".

I am going to order that Ikan hood now. Thanks for the advise.

i was under the impression and from testing that non of the Canon DSLR output HD image while recording??? they dont have enough proccesor power to do that and record at the same time i thought??

AFAIK the 7D outputs a HD signal when recording.
No way the 550D will output HD, either now,or in the future, it's a hardware limitation, probably from only having one Digic4.
I use a Lilliput, mainly because it's all I can afford ATM.
If Canon releases a new cam with HD O/P and "correct" video, I'll consider stumping up for a good monitor.
Dave
