HF100 playback : whacked audio

When I play back a recorded clip I get deafening squelch instead of the actual audio. What the heck am I doing wrong? At this point the only way I can listen to audio during a clip playback is to pull out the headphones and put my ear next to the built in speaker, almost impossible to hear the audio with ambient noise. I know the audio is recorded fine, because I hear it fine when transferred to a PC. Headphones are in the AV/Headphone jack, menu in camera has AV/headphones set to headphones. I can hear the audio find through the headphones when recording. This is really annoying and it seems ridiculous not to be able to hear audio playback in headphones when playing back a recorded clip. And I do know about the button for playing back the last clip recorded, that has no audio; that is different than what I am describing here. Can anybody help?

Problem solved! I had had the AV/phones set to phones, and the phones icon indeed on the screen-- however... I had done that in the menus for RECORDING, not for PLAYBACK. I went into the menu for playback and I saw AV/phones set to AV, not Phones. I now understand that the AV/Phones setting must be specified in the two related but different menus, the menu for RECORDing and the menu for PLAYback. So glad that now I can hear playback of the audio!
