Hey Panasonic! Why don't you do this for the AF200??

Step 1: Take the GH4 sensor and features and throw it into the af100 body.
Step 2: Add 4k@60fps @200mbit/s.
Step 3: Charge $4000.
Step 4: Take EVERYONES money.

Follow these steps at NAB '15 and have the most popular camera for indies since the DVX100.

(PS - bonus points if you can squeeze more DR out of the sensor. It's the only thing that the GH4 doesnt excel in.)

They've had similar request since the GH2 was hacked. For whatever reason, it doesn't seem to make financial sense to them.

I bet Panasonic comes out with something or at least announces something by NAB in the spring. Something to compete with new Sony FS-7, without the RAW upgrade options but 4K 10 bit 4:2:2, and at a lower price. I hope they pull back some of the tech from that new Varicam as well as upgrade some of the GH4 tech.

I know it doesn't matter for practical use, but I always thought the AF100 looked like a big oaf with those small m43 lenses on the front of it. I would prefer something less top heavy looking and sleeker like a DVX100.
Even if they did that, why does it have to cost more than twice as much in your mind, couldn't they bring it in under $3k?

$3K? Not while they're selling the GH4/YAAAAAAAAAAGGGHH!!!!!! for ~$3300, no... $4K would be a minimum, and still a deal.

Assuming it ever materializes, JVC's LSX2 looks like it assembles several of the target specs... and if the S35 sensor works properly with the MFT SpeedBooster, could also be capable of that oft-ballyhooed 'full frame aesthetic.'

if they develop some nice video oriented m43 all-around lens to answer Sony 28-135/4, that would make it a complete package.

Meh. DR is not the only issue with the GH4 chip. The other is poor low-light performance and noise at higher ISO. Give us another 2 stops of DR and a cleaner better performance at higher ISO - and no, you don't have to go as far as the a7s - and I'm interested. Plus, as long as we're dreaming, if they managed some kind of in-body stabilization, all in a package that's 30% smaller than the af100, well, that would have me sold. I'd shell out up to $3000 for that package (even without any kit lens!). C'mon Panny, you can do it!

It's now called the GY-LS300. But i think it'll be more than $3,000.

What is the point of s35 sensor in m43 mount?! How many native m43 lenses cover s35? Zero! Only those which are adapted from FF like Rokinons. Wouldn't it be better to have e-mount and benifit from numerous native lenses?
Maybe it is cheaper to license m43 mount...

Exactly: m43 is open, E-mount is proprietary. The open-source Apertus camera will likely also utilize a m43 mount with a S35 sensor. The idea isn't pointless... you can use almost any other systems' lenses with adapters (Nikon, Canon, PL, etc etc). For native lenses, JVC's stated plan is to offer a semi-automatic crop mode much like the full-frame Sony A7S and Nikon D4 offer for APS-designed glass.

Think of a camera that could effectively offer selectable crop modes of S35, 4/3, and Super-16. We're getting closer at the high end with things like Panasonics S35/S16 convertible Varicam and possibly the BM Ursa. Still, it's a dream that nobody has fully implemented. There is absolutely nothing wrong with greater flexibility.

Panasonic has lost my bigger $$ to Sony. I'm getting the FS7 for everything it is. Need to make a capital purchase before year end and the FS7 is what I have been wanting for years. Its at top of my budget but I can't be bothered to wait for Panasonic and Canon will just drag their feet for another year. Maybe tease something at NAB for fall launch but then thats a year of making money with my FS7. November can't come soon enough.

My GH4 will be B cam duties and timelapse (along with my GH3).

The 28-135 F4 is everything I've been wanting in an S35 lens. Closest thing I have seen to a large sensor ENG lens. F4 is plenty fast enough for the FS7 ISO range and focus needs. Nice do it all par-focal, stabilized, weather sealed lens. I will use my 18-35 1.8 to cover wides but for shooting people People 28-135 is the perfect run & gun range.

I love the idea of s35 chip & the flexibilty of a m43 mount. Especially with a speedbooster. Can JVC make a reliable camera? I remember shooting with their DVCAM-style shoulder mount - great picture but was very plastic & was in the repair shop twice the 1st year.

That JVC looks fantastic. The only thing they didn't mention was the output, is it 8bit or 10? Other than that it seems to have everything I'd want. Small design, S 35mm, 4/3, XLR and ND filters! He even mentions that they may have 120fps. And they reckon under 5000 Euros, this sounds very promising indeed.

My money would be on any "AF200" being s35 - not 4/3, so no, I don't think what the original poster suggested will happen.

That is now more feasible as Panasonic have the sensor developed for the Varicam, and - as Sony have used the F5 sensor in the FS7 - it would make sense from an economy of scale perspective to use the Varicam sensor in a lower cost camera. The questions then are "when?" - and I wouldn't hold your breath for it being soon - and what will they leave off the Varicam spec for such a "little brother" camera? With the FS7, Sony have given them a hard act to follow, and let's not forget that it typically takes well over a year at least for a camera to go from concept to finished design.

I think 4/3 will continue to have a successful future in GH4 type cameras - hybrid still/video - but I just don't see it in any future dedicated video camera. Such would inevitably just look a poor relation to all the s35 competition.
