Here's what the NAB Show looked like 20 years ago

Thank you, refocusedmedia, for posting this. My random take-aways:

1. In 1995, I was working to finally move from video to film. So I didn't keep tabs on NAB. I don't even remember it. Now, NAB is quite distracting to me.

2. The gear there was all the cool new hotness, like frame-accurate Super-VHS VCRs. It's a good thing at the time that I was broke. If I had the money, I would have been sorely tempted to pour tens of thousands of dollars into all of that stuff.

3. Keeping a historical perspective can subdue wild spending. That shiny piece of gear today will, 20 years from now, look like the things in these videos. Then again, Youtube has shown that videos made on old gear can be wildly popular. And something like Youtube seems to be the future. In other words: don't blow all your money on gear, but even if you do, maybe it's not the end of the world.

Wow.

I had an EVO-9720 Hi8 editor.

And I still have one of those little Panasonic 2-input switchers sitting around here somewhere. WJ-MX12, I believe.

Bad transitions be damned.....the girls in video 2 will never go out of style. never go out of style

Looking back at tech from decades ago is always good for a laugh and some perspective.

April 1995: I was two months away from graduating high school, two and a half years from buying my first Betacam, and five years from my first NAB.
