Hercules Fence Web Commercial

Hey Everyone,

I'm done with this video, but I'm curious to hear feedback from some other working pros. It's basically an extended web commercial that describes a bit about their business. It's 3mins which is probably way too long but that was the target length I was given so I went with it. Also, I figure the target customer would be someone interested in learning more about fences--which is why they are at the site in the first place.

I didn't have much time on this one and I'm booked with other work, so this just kind of came out this way. With that said, I still feel like I'm trying to get to the next level on my own productions and can't quite get there. Thoughts (other than quit the business)?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Also, this was my first shoot with a DSLR. Rebel t2i, canon zoom, and a zeiss 50mm. There is a 2nd one of these for their sister company that I shot and I think I did a better job with. Also used only primes (20mm and 50mm) on the next one.

I think its a great communication tool about the company

I cant see any large chip beauty

maybe think about some shots which would make you proud as a stills photographer

maybe you need a long lens to clean up the backgrounds, (70-200) and a ND grad to controld your DOF

The still photos - id zoom in on them and not have any dodgy borders

And the story IMO should start

"When the Pentagon wanted to keep people out they chose us"

They have great clients you dont hear about until near the end

Thanks for the feedback. I like your idea about starting off with something that has more impact. I'll try to note that on the next video for them. I also think I need to step in and take more control over the script. Noted.

I used a vari ND on the outside 50mm shots of signs and some fork lift stuff, but I ended up using the borrowed zoom for much of the footage (or at least the footage that made the final cut) and had to shoot at pretty high f stops in the bright sun so I had deep DOF and my ND didn't fit the zoom. The second thing I shot for them I was more comfortable with primes and didn't touch the zoom so I think that one will look prettier.

Shots that make me proud? That is a good core concept to repeat in my head on the next shoot.

I also agree on the photos. They provided them and they were pretty low res so I feared zooming in and panning and scanning would make it worse. But as it is now, that section is like watching a Power Point show. (yuck)

Thanks again.

Second that.
It also sounds too much like those local car commercials. I especially didn´t like the speakers flow, he was talking very "mechanically".
Also this thing could use some interviews, I´m certain the person in charge of the "high security jobs" can make the story of the Pentacon fencing much more vivid than the narrators voice...
Further some shots where recurring and thus redundant, if you don´t have enough material, shorten the text (also some recurring parts) or shoot more.
Just my 2c of course!

Richard, I'm sure I can get you a discount and they do "have 6 locations from Baltimore to NC... call today!!!" yeah! Thank you for kind words and feedback.

Spartacus, I think you might be on to something which comes straight back to me. This needs to be better produced from the get go. The Creative on this wasn't very clear, so I just shot stuff at the facility but really a budget needs to be setup to allow for shooting interviews with key staff and even better, customers. If that isn't possible I think this needs to be about a minute and a half and cut out the redundant shots and redundant voice over. (I did edit the script down to 3min from about 4.5 mins.)

The budget wasn't high on this (goes without saying) and I was brought in from the web production company rather late in the game, so the script and creative was handled by their people. I get a feeling we are going to be seeing a lot more of this as small/mid business skip the ad agency and go straight to the web producers, who in turn will act as TV producers, who in turn hire geeks like me to make stuff look exciting.
