Wallpaper* City Short Helsinki documentary

Helsinki is Europe's most northern capital, but what is it like to live and work in?
Director Joel Hypén talks to Finnish designers Harri Koskinen, Linda Bergroth and Sari Syväluoma as well as architect Pentti Raiski and design director Ville Kokkonen to find out what it is like to live in Helsinki and how it affects the designers' work.

This video was shot on the Canon EOS 550D with an old Helios 50mm /1.8 lens and a few shots with a Sigma 18-55mm / 2.8 lens.

The film was originally published on Wallpaper* magazines website in December 2010. http://www.wallpaper.com/video/travel/city-short-helsinki/721554580001

Really nice footage and beautiful shots. The issue with the 550D seems to be the dynamic range, but otherwise the shots are great. What did you do for focus (external monitor?) and sound?

Hi,
thanks for your feedback. I did color grading with MB Looks. I wanted quite a dramatic contrast for the film, but maybe the blacks are a bit too crushed. Naveenmedia might also be slightly confusing the cameras dynamic range with the color correction. It could be more the post production treatment that lacks dynamics in this case. On the other hand I guess the 550D isn't as good in terms of dynamics as say the 5DmarkII.

I'm still quite happily surprised with the results we're constantly getting with this camera. If you take into account its limitations when you plan your shots, its quite possible to get very good looking footage. The new 600D also looks promising in the price range. The DSLR's are certainly here to stay for HD video, and during the past year I've seen more DSLR's than traditional video cameras in budget TV commercial, music video and documentary projects.
