Hey guys - I apologise for my noobness in advance!

Recently got my hmc151. Ive been doing some test shooting in PH720 25p....

Got it into premiere on a 720p 25p timeline...

Its all horrid and jolty? Im confused...

Can someone turn a light on here?!

well the edges blur, generally the footage is jolty.

im clearly just doing something stupid, but have no idea what it is?!

if I shoot at 720p 25p, what timeline settings, and render settings should I use?

Just dropped serious bucks on this cam and now feeling like a total idiot as I dont have the knowledge to use my footage :S

Help couldnt be more appreciated at this point!

Have you rendered the footage including any effects? This will get rid of most joltyness edge blurs that occur from you computer struggling to process it.

What's the specs on your editing machine?

I guess I'm not sure by what you mean by "jolty". Do you mean it stutters on playback? Does it look blocky with random artifacts?

ive been trying to render it out with h.264 at maximum quality.

off the top of my head:

i7 2.8 quad
8gb ram
ati (cant remember exact model - 1gb onboard ram)

1tb 720 rpm jobby

Needless to say the comp is fine...

Lets say ive shot a music vid in 720p 25p. Where would you go from there? What timeline would you put it in? What settings would you use to export the media?

At this stage I would just love to see my footage exported then played back in the great quality it plays back as the raw file - but I also need to know how to get it on youtube at this quality.

Im aware all this seems ridiculous, but whatever I do dosnt seem to work.

Cheers

Are u trying to edit the footage natively (h.264) or did u transcode it ( change it to a more edit friendly format)?

Next question... is the file you've exported from Premiere the one that looks bad, or is it the raw footage that looks bad when you play back from the timeline?

im doing it as god intended, staight up avchd footage mts files.

Heres one process i took:

1. Set camera to PH 720 25p.
2. Imported footage to computer
3. Open up a avchd 720p 25p timeline, and import footage.
4. Seeing as this is a test, I didnt edit whatsoever!
5. Export h.264, maxed out all settings... set it to youtube HD, then customised settiings to pal and 25 frames a second..

I must point out I tried many different settings... but to date this one acheived the best results..

What im after is simply to get the a format that plays back at great quality...(and can be uploaded to vimeo/youtube etc)

The problem is the quality always seems to be low?

Any recomendations? What export settings do you suggest to acheive great quality?

actually correction...

the files when played back in prem have the issue also....random squares popping up and things like that...hard to describe really.

OK...

So the only problem I have now is rendering the movie out... It just seems as though it is dropping frames, and isnt as smooth as before I render.

If some1 could tell me what settings to use that would be great. Ive seen hundereds of great videos on this website, im a little miffed as to why no1 has any settings to suggest? Only seems to be me having this problem :(

As far as the little squares and such popping up in Premiere, there is a good chance it's the playback settings. In the corner of both the playback and preview monitors, do you see what looks like four little lines next to a down triangle? Click that and a menu should pop up. Towards the bottom is the options Highest Quality, Draft Quality, and Automatic Quality. If anything other than Highest Quality is selected, then that is the reason for the strange artifacts in such during playback in Premiere. It's a function to allow easier playback of files at the expense of quality, but on your machine you should have enough power that it isn't necessary.

Please note that this affect playback *only*. It doesn't have anything to do with the final output when you export a file... so if all your issues are showing up when you play something back inside Premiere, than that is the most likely solution. However, if you're getting this stuff when playing back outside of Premiere, then I don't know what to tell you at this point. You may want to ask this question in the Premiere section farther down on the website, as you might get an answer there.

Ok so in addition to my original post.

I have realised that when i take the exported file and upload it to the internet, the file plays fine?!?!?!

Its only when the file plays back on my computer (windows media player/quicktime) that I suffer?

The file plays fine on both youtube and vimeo, and indeed in premiere. Only in a media player on my computer is there an actual problem? Does anyone know why this is?

It could be a lot of things. Windows Media Player isn't the best out there to begin with. It might be utilizing a crappy codec. You might have more than one codec installed for H264, with WMP grabbing a relatively inefficient one that your CPU just doesn't have enough number crunching power for - could be other things. I wouldn't get all that worked up about it - just use a different media player, that works better. I doubt it's worth the hassle of trying to configure WMP to play the files well.

On the computer I'm using right now, I have an old copy of Nero's suite (Nero 6 with updates applied) and ffdshow installed. I use that for stuff WMP chokes on. It might be old, but that old Nero media player handles most stuff reasonably okay.

I have just bought a new beast of a computer - i7 2.8 quad, 8gb, 7200rpm etc etc... im very sure its not the comp - same problem when playing the files on my laptop too. Just plain weird.

For an age I was thinking there was something going wrong in the export, and had I not uploaded the video to youtube/vimeo, I would still be under that impression.

Ive tried the file in wmp, quicktime and vlc all to no good effect. But I suppose at the end of the day if my footage is designated to live its life online, its no real problem.

I will try the software you suggested, and if anyone else has any other thoughts they would be much appreciated.

Cheers
