Help with purchase...

I have enough money to buy a T2i as well as a Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Zoom Lens or I could just go with the 7d with just the kit lens for now (and probably won't be able to get a better lens for 6-7months). I have not been blown away from the limited T2i footage I've seen thus far and the "similar sensor to the 7D" sounds a bit fishy to me. Then again, I may be being paranoid. I am going to be using the camera 95% of the time for videoing low light weddings (intercutting with an HMC 150). Any advice?

Why the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8? Sure its a great lens but since you're on a budget there are cheaper alternatives that are just as fast light wise.

Also, what about the current T2i footage do you find lacking compared to the 7D?

I opted for that lens based on the advice of others in this post I made:

The only reason I'm buying a DSLR is to take advantage of its low light capabilities for video (not stills). I am a wedding videographer, and (despite my advice during our pre-wedding meetings) brides in my area consistently have receptions that take place in extremely dark conditions. Because of my budget, I can only afford one lens if I bought the T2ii, and I want it to be the best, fastest, zoom lens possible (or close to it) and wide enough to capture a ceremony should I choose to use it for the master shot. If you have any lens recommendations that are more affordable and still fit that bill please send them my way. Again, while I will enjoy taking stills with the camera for fun, my ONLY reason for purchasing the camera and the lens is for video purposes.

As for what I don't like about the footage from the T2i, it's very hard to say. The low light capabilities seem to be inferior to the 7D and the contrast, clarity, and saturation (straight out of the camera) looks flatter to me for lack of a better word. The comment Philip Bloom made in which hes states "the 7d will have better image quality for sure. trust me." also makes me wary in that I know he's quite the expert on Canon DSLRs. I realize that there's very little footage out there from the T2i to peruse right now, but what I've seen so far seems to pale in comparison to the 7D footage I've watched. Of course, a lot of this probably has to do with the person shooting the footage. If you think I'm crazy, please let me know. I'd love to pay half the price of the 7D for the T2i and own a camera that's capable of capturing (at least 95%) the same quality video. I'm just a bit skeptical. As Barry Green said on this forum, the difference in price has to come from somewhere.

I don't think Phillip really meant that, especially since he wasn't basing it on facts as the camera wasn't out yet or available to him.

Have you considered these lenses:

I'm not going to ask you to trust me but look out for T2i videos coming out soon. My guess is you won't be able to tell the difference between it and the 7D.

You should get what you're most comfortable with but if you say money is a concern, you're going to get T2i recommendations.

Yeah, it does. I'd most likely use my HMC 150 for the master and the DSLR for closeups so that I could have more flexibility in stopping/starting. My fellow shooters and I have headsets, though, so the DSLR could be used for the (stop and start) master as long as one of the other cameras had the shot during the time it was shut down. All of that will be a bit of a pain to get used to, but a necessary compromise for shooting with a current Cannon DSLR (and I'm not a fan of the GH1 for my purposes).
