C300: Help With C300 Exposure Setting

Hi guys,

I have a shoot this coming Monday at night with the C300 and will be shooting C LOG. The shoot is after dark and we will be shooting a race car in a small confined area and the set will be lit. Canon wants the 18% middle gray to fall at 32 percent on the waveform. The tests that I have done today in bright sunlight with that exposure is a little scary as the image looks quite underexposed. My question is; where should the 18% gray fall on the waveform under these conditions? It will be pitch black outside of the areas that the lights are lighting up. Should I take the waveform all the way up to 50% or keep it lower? I have no idea if the car will have a lot of white on it or not.

Thanks in advance

Canon recommends 38 IRE for interiors with C-Log. Any reason you feel C-Log is necessary in this situation? You may find Wide DR to be a viable option.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the reply. They will be using the C300 footage with Epic footage and I figured that C LOG would be easier to match up. They opted for this camera, but they don't have much experience with it so they asked for my opinion regarding camera setup. I figured with the wealth of information that is available on this forum it wouldn't hurt to get some opinions. I will check out Wide DR.

Thanks again

Push it up. If you starve it of light, then there will be noise. You can crush the dark areas later, however the subject ie the car has to be exposed well. Keep your histogram on and you will be able to see where the subject falls in it.
