Help Thanks? Technical Questions

Hi,

I posted a copy of this in the Workflow section but I figure the technical section would also apply. Can't hurt.

Just about to make a music video with the Panasonic PAL HVX 200E HD – P2 camera
and I’m scared!!! This new-fad, hard-drive technology is making me nervous.

Not sure about a lot of things regarding this camera and how to use it effectively and, unfortunately, I don’t have Final Cut 5 (in time) to preview what I shoot. Perhaps someone could help?

Basically, we have the camera, two memory cards and a portable hard-drive (that will hold about 100 mins of footage). We’re shooting lots of stunts in front of a green-screen and some of the shots will be in slow-motion.

What I’d like to know is:

1) How can I preview what I’ve shot? Can I play it back through the camera at least?
2) After my 100 mins. of footage is up, can I simply dump it across to a normal computer hard-drive? If yes, how do I do this (I’m assuming my camera drive is a FS-100).
3) If I can just dump the footage to another drive, can I then clear the camera’s portable drive, effectively giving me another 100 mins.? Or do I have to format it, or something similar… and how?
4) Same for the cards: how do you get the info onto a hard-drive and then do you have to format them? How?
5) I’m told that it’s best to capture any slow-motion shots on the actual memory cards, not the hard-drive. True?
6) I’ve heard that there are some modes that are not supported in Final Cut? 720 pN I think. Is that true?
7) What’s the best mode to shoot in for the most film-like quality.

And 8) Since I'm shooting on green-screen and I need the most screen area possible does the HVX have a 4:3 mode? Shooting 16:9 seems like it's going to waste a lot of valuable pixels, if that makes sense (I want the subject in as much frame as possible since I'm removing the green and creating a new shot anyway). Any suggestions?

Thanks kindly in advance,

ALEX

The camera doesn't have a portable drive. The FS-100 is a capture device. Check the company's web site.

4) Same for the cards: how do you get the info onto a hard-drive and then do you have to format them? How?

You transfer them via firewire or USB from the cam. Or to p2 store.

Then you can format them in the cam.

5) I’m told that it’s best to capture any slow-motion shots on the actual memory cards, not the hard-drive. True?

It's not best, it's currently the only way.

6) I’ve heard that there are some modes that are not supported in Final Cut? 720 pN I think. Is that true?

FCP 5.1.x will import and edit 720/24pn

7) What’s the best mode to shoot in for the most film-like quality.

progressive

And as the other poster observes, you the search function first.

Thanks

Hi again,

Thanks to those that answered my 'newbie' questions.

I will actually try out the Search options now. Still getting used to even getting around this forum.

Much appreciated,
