Help! Simple guide to HMC150 and FCP

Hi..

I would be very grateful if anyone could point me to a simple guide to the transcoding, log and transfer process from the HMC150 to FCP.

What settings should I use to log and transfer, to transcode etc?

Once I have the media in there I'll be fine... but a little unclear on the basic initial set-up.

Thanks!

There is a preferences section in log and transfer.

You elect either pro res or AIC and then log and transfer.

You need an Intel Mac and FCP 6.0.5 or later.

On page 107 of the "HD Formats" pdf, which is included in your install, is a workflow discussion on AVCHD.

I have a new MBP - so no trouble in the intel... I also have the latest FCP (7).

When I try to l&t with the totally random setting I have given it under audio/video settings, it tells me it needs to adjust to what I have and seems to manage - so I can actually use this footage.

I eventually found preferences under the little gear icon (apple noob here) - refers to a p2 plugin in and an avchd plugin. Apple prores offers (hq), (lt), (proxy) or a basic version.

Just I am not sure if I need to do any more with it... what settings are optimal.

I think things may have changed a bit with FCP7; then again, I dont really have any idea!

You probably should set up your project to match the settings of the media you are importing. I use FC Express, so I'm limited to either PAL or NTSC type timing, even though I shot my HMC150 footage at 24p 1080x1920... I setup my FCE project for PAL timing and HD. The log and transfer transcoded to AIC, and amazingly... the AIC is 24 fps... Sure there is a slight timing difference between 24 and 25... so, I'm not going to expect the audio to be in synch hours down the time line... but since most of my clips were under 1 minute, it proved no big problem.

At the moment I'm probably going to switch over to Premiere as I have CS4 Production Premium. The use of AVCHD is still problematic... but at least I can set the project parameters up for my preferred mode...

Have any of you guys found a good workflow yet for transcoding AVCHD into Prores 422 PROXY, editing your then, the subbing in the full Prores 422? I'm dying to find a good, simple, step-by-step workflow for that.

This would require two transfers?

Why do that?

If you want to cut a piece on a laptop for example, and don't feel like having big files on the drive. Then after you're all done copy the project file to a workstation (Mac Pro) and re-link to the higher quality media to do your final render/export.

I personally don't use this workflow, but could see how some people with more underpowered or hard drive limited computers could benefit from this

=)

Is there any downside to just doing the transfer and transcode in Toast, converting it to the HQ ProRes 422, then simply importing it into the project ? skipping the Log & transfer.

I can batch code the lot in Toast to a new location, then just import to QT - Prores422. After which I can back up the original files to disc.

Thanks
