Hi Guys,

Today was my second test using my b+h Pol filter. I was located 90 degrees to the sun and when I rotated the pol filter to get a nice blue on the sky what happened????!!!!! The girl got Red Hairs!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm lost. What the hell I'm doing wrong?

I used: 7D, Canon 17-55mm 2.8, B+H Circ Pol Filter + ND4 Filter.

Hm.
I wonder if it's possibly that it's caused by infrared light?
That wouldn't be filtered out by just a straight ND (or a polarizer).

Just a guess.

Infrared light is not filtered out by neutral density filters.
In extreme situations, and in some cameras, it can create a situation where blacks can have a red tint to them.

I'm not sure that is it though - I've never seem an issue with IR contamination in DSLRs, and with so many people shooting with ND filters in high sunlight situations, it seems like it would have happened at some point already.

Are you certain her hair color doesn't have a red tint to it naturally?
If it's dyed, there is a good chance it might.

But where is coming this Infrared Light??
She has Black hair. She used a hair toner. But look the pic:IMG_0623.jpg

I never had effects like this before without filter. Now I need to use the filter and BOOM. Oh god, help me guys. Now it's evening in Europe. You think that the problem is that I'm using ND + Pol at the same time???

I checked all shots again. Here one more information to find out:

- When the girl was located 90 degrees to the sun and the pol was on the position that the blue is dark->black became red.
- When the girl was located in front of the sun and the pol filter was on the position that the blue was dark on the sky->black stayed black.

Do it help???

Hi Guys,

I test it today with myself. Also my hair became red like the girl. Here is something wrong?

My opinion: The filter has a problem or pol filter is only prepared to use for water and skies AND NOT FOR PEOPLE..

Comon help me guys :=(

But where is coming this Infrared Light??

Infrared light would be coming from the sun.
Though I'm not convinced that is the cause.

Have you tried a different polarizing filter?
I'd be curious to know if a different brand gave you the same effect.

circular or linear polarizer? sometimes polarizers do odd things with color of relected light. If you are using a linear pola on a camera that requires circular then the color effects can be extreme as you turn the filter.

Good point. I will go to the shop today and try maybe a Hoya

2 things I could guess that hadn't been mentioned:

1 - I'm thinking it could be a result of light from objects out of frame, hair has reflective properties when it is healthy and shiny, have you tried using the filter in a location with a controlled environment.
2 - Hair is never a solid tone, we all have shades and tones that the naked eye only sees in specific conditions. She might have very faint natural red highlights and the polarizer + environment has lots of light and color can cause the tones to have more saturation than the naked eye.

Hi, what do you mean with a controlled enviroment? But am I the only guy with this probelm? Would you recomend to don't use pol for Portraits?

Here another Test with myself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIhIO8v2fOI

I don't really notice the red in the clip you posted. I do but it seems natural, not like your hair is red, but like the sun is just reflecting upon it naturally.
