Okay I’m going to take the plunge!!!! I going to get the 7D.

I have been reading and seeing a lot of different choices but now that it is on me I’m going to ask you guys what would the best set up be? I’m getting a loan to pay for this so I really need to get everything at one time.

I already have a good tripod x 2.
I already have Redrock gear.

I’m looking at the iMac 27” but there are two choices $1699/$1999 both are very close alike except the more expensive one has a few more bites but is it really worth grabbing or would I be okay with the $1699? I like Mac and will edit with Vegas using the other side of Mac for windows hmmmmm made me think of the Moody Blues song ‘The other side of life’.

Okay now for the 7D and what three lenses? I have seen some great footage coming from the other guys GH1 / D90 but I think the 7D is the way to go. OH one more thing I’m shooting a film not Doc or Wedding or Commercial just a nice short 30-mintue film.

And what is the best sound system to go with? I heard H4N.

IS there anything else I need? This should edit on Vegas right?

Thanks

What do you want someone to tell you? You haven't asked anything that hasn't been asked and answered dozens of times.

Mac: Any modern Mac Pro will be fine. Not going to get a Mac Pro? Proceed at your own risk. You've been warned.

RedRock Gear: What does that mean? They make dozens of products. Do you own them all? Tell us what you own already.

Three lenses: Who knows. You don't offer a budget, you don't say what you intend to shoot. So I suggest you buy 3 zooms. Cover from 10mm to 300mm, and all at a constant aperture of 2.8 or better.

Best sound system? Buy a Sound Devices 744T. That should hold you for a while.

Anything else you need to make a film. Yea, a DP, gaffer, sound man, editor, lights, mics, grip, tons of stuff.

Edit on Vegas...? Sure, just transcode to Cineform, edit on Vegas Pro 8.0c, and you'll be fine. If you want to edit on Vegas, why are you buying a Mac?

That would be my question. You'll get a LOT more bang for the buck if you stick with a Windows machine.

Get a Mac if you want to use Final Cut. Well worth it. But for Vegas, stick with a PC.

You can edit on any current gen mac (within reason, I'm not suggesting you go and buy a Mac mini - Macbook/iMac/Mac Pro only!) but as mentioned, Mac Pros are the staple editing platform. As long as you don't mind converting time whilst you transcode into ProRes Proxy and LT, go for something with a little less grunt.

As far as lenses are concerned, definitely get the 24-70mm f2.8 and 70-200mm f2.8. Then it's up to you what you go for in terms of longer or shorter lenses. Canon make a 16-55mm f2.8, and obviously there are all the tele lenses that are out there.

If you want three of the best zooms:

Tokina 11-16mm
Canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS
Canon 70-200 F4 IS USM

That should cover you.

If you do plan on getting one of those 27in Imac's Apple is selling them refurbished for $1450. Apparently there have been getting a lot of complaints about the picture quality so whether or not that has been fixed in the refurbished ones I don't know, but you might want to check them out anyway.

Having said that I agree with the other comments, if you're gonna use vegas you might as well go windows since its a hell of a lot cheaper. The only reason to go mac is if you're gonna use final cut.
