Help please: HVX, 24p, Compressor.

Hi guys, I could use a bit of advice,

Here's what I did.

I shot in 1080, 24p, direct to firestore as QT files.

I imported into FCP, and they showed up as DVCPROHD1080i60, 29.97fps, Upper(odd)

I then did all my editing.

I then exported that as a quicktime file, then re-imported it, because I realized I needed to do the next step which is

Reverse Telecine Pull Down

I -then- took that resulting 24fps, 1280x1024 file, and placed it in a regular old NTSC DV 4:3 720/480 timeline, so that it can be broadcast on TV. I had (of course) to resize it, because the 1280x1024 timeline was not as tall vertically (which doesnt make ANY sense to me, but whatever)

I then exported, using Compressor, using he default Web Streaming options, only changing the quality to best, (and the bit rate changed to automatic), and changing it to update frame every 30 seconds.

Here is the video that resulted, be careful it's 16megs.

If I understand the frame tagging correctly, any direct, real time stream coming off the 1394 firewire DOES NOT have 24P or 24PA or 24N applied to it.

If you want these options I believe you must record first to a P2 or if SD, to tape and then send this to a hard drive.

I have been using a CitiDisk Firewire hard drive (120 GB) and without a P2 card it is purely 59.94 frame rate (saved in .mov format, although this can me reconfigured in the hard drive).

You could use a codec to go to 23.976 from 59.94 (a.k.a. 29.97 interlaced).

Good luck.

Side note for future P2 use:

If you are using FCP 5+ check out how to remove duplicate frames when importing P2 media to scratch disks for FCP use.

My own take on what I see in your clip....

My own take on what I see in your clip....

It almost seems as though you had some interlaced artifacts in your original video? Because it sure looked as though some processing was done to try eliminating the jaggies that can be recorded. Also, your workflow seemed pretty extensive.

The only reason I dropped in today is because I'm trying to trim my own workflow to eliminate some of this process.

First, set your HVX camera settings to record in 1080/24PA (the advanced codec). The result is fantastic, and I've decided to opt using that setting over 720p30 (which also is film-like but I've read enough from people testing the clips who say that 1080/24PA is the best). And, since I know you have Final Cut Pro, update it to 5.1.4, which allows a faster more efficient workflow with the 1080/24PA setting.

When youre about to input, set your input to 1080p/24. That way you don't have to render when you input from your P2 or your extenal FS-100. After editing in FCP, export the file as a self-contained movie with no compression, which runs through pretty fast. But then take that uncompressed file and drop it into some software called MPEG Streamclip, which is one powerful program, IMHO. I've been playing with oiutputting, and it does everything so that you can either crop your video or output it as a letterbox file or output as an anamorphic video. Playing with the settings for outputting to VGA (640x480) in letterbox for web, I've knocked down post production by over an hour from how we were doing it before. Hope the info helps, but ultimately, you have to play with output codecs, sizes and all the other options that MPEG Streamclip gives. I still can't believe the software is free.
