Help-newbie: HVX to HDD/laptop directly?

I'm in a time crunch and can't afford to spend hours researching and reading on the HVX workflow. I need to purchase a camera tomorrow. I have a general understanding of the HVX and related issues, but am having a tough time finding clear answers for some questions.

I am embarking on a series of interviews for a documentary feature (2-3 hour interviews each) and the HVX workflow is pretty complicated for that situation. However, it is a better camera overall for many reasons, though the initial cost will be much more. (The initial choice was a Canon XH-A1)

1. Can the HVX record DVCPRO-HD (native 720p/24pn or 30pn) real-time directly to an external HDD (not a Firestore) using the Firewire connection? If yes, is a laptop required?

2. Can the HVX record directly to a laptop (internal HDD or external) using Firewire? If so, with a Mac, what is the minimum setup I will need (including the card reader device).

As you might see, I'm looking for solutions to hot-swapping P2 cards.

Thank you very much!

You cannot record directly to a dumb hard drive. I don't know of a single camera that can do this.

You can record to a hard drive using some NLEs or monitoring/recording applications, such as AVID, Edius, FCP, Matrox AXIO, Adobe DV Rack, DV Monitor, or Scopebox.

Yes, through a laptop. And only through a laptop or desktop.

Yes, using FCP, EDIUS, AXP, or DV Rack 2.0 HD.

A firewire cable, FCP 4.5 or later, and two firewire busses on your computer (one built-in, one external through the PCMCIA or ExpressCard slot). Plug your external drive into one of the firewire busses, and your camera into the other.

As I understand it, FCP 5 records/captures only at 1080. Is this correct?

Does FCP 6 capture allow capturing at 720p?

Do any of these programs allow captures to a laptop at 720p? PC or MAC
