Hi guys, i'm new on this site and also new in the filmmaking world, so I was wondering if any of you pro's could help me... First off im not sure if this is the place to post this but as two of the cameras I have been looking at are Canon's I thought it was the best place to start. Ok now all that is out of the way I get ask my Question..

I have been asked to make a music video by my good friend but my old canon DV camera has gone missing so I need a new one. I have kind of narrowed the search down to a few camera's.

Canon HF G10
Canon EOS 550D (Im sure there is a steep learning curve but I want the very best quality)
JVC GZ-HM1
Panasonic HDC-900
Sony CX700

I would also be using it in live venues to record the band and maybe edit some footage together to put in the video.

I will be using Final Cut Pro to do the editing, although I do also have Premiere CS3 on my Mac as well.

Any help with my Quest would be very greatly appreciated

Many thanks in advance

Phil

The only reason to get a Canon 550D is for shallow depth of field and low light, otherwise it is much more difficult to use and has lower resolution than the two leading camcorders in your list. In good light the Panasonic TM900 and the Canon HF G10 can produce amazing results. Camcorderinfo.com preferred the Canon for its low light capabilities and is almost pro like controls, but the TM900 is slightly sharper and has a better image stabilization system. The Canon shares the lens with its pro siblings, the XA10 and the XF100, giving a upward migration path and superior quality for a lower price. Panasonic has yet to introduce pro versions of it's TM900, but there is a major industry show just opening. Advanced shooters not concerned with a "pro image" use both the Canon and the Panasonic.. I use an Canon XF100 for portable work and am pleased with the results.

Many thanks for your reply, seems like the Canon G10 is the one to go for then as I want as near pro as I can get without having to spend a fortune...

ThE HF G10 is great, for $500 more you get essentially the same camera with a removable handle that includes dual XLR inputs and a much better built-in microphone,
