sometimes there is a glitch transcoding mts files via fcp to prores 422.After I shot for the day, I find out that my FCP log and transfer does not transcode the mts files in the camera.I know why that happens, one reason is I forgot to format the card before shooting when the last segment has already been downloaded.

my question is since the mts files are there but does not download thru log and transfer, what do i do? How do I save those clips? is there a work around?
thanks

I'm not sure if I get your problem correctly, you're saying that FCP is not able to log and transfer your clips for some reason. Although this never happened to me, you can try different things:

1. Try to watch the clips through some AVCHD playing software like VLC. Beware: VLC seems to have some problems decoding various GH1 clips which results in different artifacts while playing the clip, but at least you can check whether the clip contains the recording you're looking for.
2. If the clip is there and you can watch it through VLC but FCP cannot transcode it, try a different transcoding tool. (e.g. Toast, ffmpeg, mpegstreamclip or similar)

its happening to me tried taking out the mts files to another card but fcp still wont read it, just afraid that if you were shooting important clips for the day, i find out that nothing was recorded. will follow your suggestions and see if it works next time it happens... thanks again

Do you transfer the clips to your hard drive first?

EyeTV and Toast Video Player , both by Elgato Software play GH1 raw clips, even in the 60i wrapper. I use these to test and view clips.

Add .mpg after .MTS to play clips. You can always remove the .mpg suffix later.

no its on the card when I make the log and transfer.Even if i transfer the mts to my hard disk, its a no go.when I format the card before I shoot it is always ok, when i download avchd mts files and erase the mts files in the card manually and place it back to shoot new scenes without reformating the card then my problem begins.

In order to use Log & Transfer you can't just copy the .mts files but the entire PRIVATE folder from the card to the harddrive. And then you cannot make any changes to it's content, not even delete files.

Remember if you've deleted all the folders and what not required for mts you can always use rewrap2m4v to convert the footage to a standard mp4 format, all you need is the original mts file

yes i am sure now that thats where the problem lies, the corresponting other files in the private folders is not erased while the the mts are so when you load new mts clips is introduced the corresponting files are confused.thats the reason it has to be reformatted before it can start from zero

does that mean that mts file cannot stand alone, you need the entire private folder? does that mean when you use the vlc or toast it will require presence of their corresponding private folder

My tool: fast Mac MTS Converter(29USD). I purchased the software because my Panasonic camcorder is an HD and the video format is MTS. There is no free software that comes with the camera that allows me to save the file in a format that others can view.It support many formats. I am now able to save it into a ProRes 422 that I can import to FCP without rendering to create great family movies. What's more, saved my time.
Do as this guide.
