16GB P2 card = how many minutes?

1080 roughly 16 minutes (ballpark a min a gig)

720P/60 - same thing

720P/24pn you'll get about 40 minutes (41 if memory serves).

PN mode only records the native frames (meaning it is only recording 24 frames per second as opposed to the full 60fps).

P mode 'pads' the signal with duplicate frames in order to keep the 720P signal compatible with the full 60fps spec (this is the same way the Varicam works, for example). Those frames are then usually stripped out in post.

damn dude, i don't understand any of that, LOL. I've been looking for an article or something to try to educate myself on it but haven't had any luck yet. ugh....

720/24p uses pulldown to fit the 24 into 60, so it's actually recording 60fps and uses more storage as such.

720/24pN records just the 24 native frames, so you get more record time. about 2.5 minutes per gig at 24PN.

Basically any of the non-native HD modes are 1 gig per minute of recorded footage. The PN mode record times are based on the frame rate. Lower frame rate = longer record time. 1 minute per gig for 60fps. 2 for 30fps. 2.5 for 24fps, etc.

Ok, so if I were shooting at 720p/24pN I'll be able to get about 40 minutes of recording time on a 16GB P2 card, correct?

What is the prefered compression format though? Is it DVCPRO, DVCPRO-HD or DVCPRO50? In reading Barry's book, it looks like DVCPRO50 is the better of the choices but will that eat up more space on the P2 card, am I reading this right?

Thanks guys... Remember, when everyone moved to the HVX I moved to the A1 because of money issues so I'm so far behind on all of this stuff... lol

Yes. About 41 or 42 minutes I think. Two 8 gig cards would actually end up being 41, while I think one 16 gig card will be 42... But, you can figure 2.5 min. per gig when shooting 24PN.

DVCPRO 50 is the best of the standard definition recording formats.

DVCPRO HD is the only option for the HD formats. All of them are DVCPRO HD. There won't be any necessary adjustments there.

SD = DV, DVCPRO25, DVCPRO 50
HD = DVCPRO HD (100)

Correct.

Not exactly.
DVCpro and DVCpro50 are both SD formats, which means 720 x 480.
So of those DVCpro50 would be the best choice, if you're shooting SD.

DVCproHD can be both 720 or 1080.
So all your questions so far have been about DVCproHD.

EDITED TO ADD:
Jason beat me to it.
