HELP! last minute stuff

Always just get one- the largest lens you might ever own, and get step rings to fit other lenses.

For example,
I have a Canon 28-135mm lens with 72mm threads, the kit lens (58mm) and some old manual lenses (49mm, 52mm, etc)

Instead of buying 5 faderND's, I just buy a 72mm one and get step rings to fit my other lenses.

The thread size of your lenses should be written on the front on your lenses. It is usually displayed next to a symbol which looks like a zero with a dash through it like this: Ø72

The lens diameter is not related to the focal length at all, so knowing that you want to get a 50-150mm lens in the future doesn't really tell you what filter you need. It is however, loosely related to the maximum aperture because lenses, especially longer ones, with wider apertures often have large front elements to gather all the light they can. So if you know you're going to want fast glass later on, like a 200mm f/2.8 or similar, then go for a larger ND filter.

The Fader ND is designed so that it can be attached directly to the front of your lens, but if you choose to do it that way, you need to buy multiple filters if you have several lenses with different threads. So it's much cheaper to get just one Fader ND and a bunch of step up rings (about $5-$10 each). You want to get a filter that is pretty close in diameter to the largest lens you will own because using step down rings (eg a 58mm filter on a 72mm lens) you will see the corners of the filter in the recorded image.

i got a 77mm and a step adapter to run on my tamron. I think same step fits on my vivitar lens, and i need another one for my nikkor 50 1.4
