C100: Help! I think I blew up my C100!!!!

Was in B&H and asked for a Dtap cable to run the C100 from an AB batt so everything on the rig would go forever on one batt. Made the mistake with the salesman of thinking the voltage was the same as for the C300.

Now I read this closer about the part, I think it is for something called a Blueshape Bubblepack. The description reads:

This BLUESHAPE P-Tap Power Adapter allows you to connect the BLUESHAPE BUBBLEPACK battery to the Canon C300 and C500. It features a proprietary, blue P-Tap connector on one end and a DC connector on the other on a 23.6" cable.

Note: The blue P-Tap connector is a proprietary BLUESHAPE connector that can be switched between 8.4V and 11.1V via the BLUESHAPE BUBBLEPACK. The voltage level should be set to match the camera's voltage or an overload could potentially be delivered to the camera. If the blue P-Tap connector is modified for use with a battery other than the BUBBLEPACK, it will deliver 14.8V and can cause an issue.

So I guess I gave the C100 a voltage it couldn't handle. Wahhhhh!!!

I was hoping there's a user accessable fuse or reset button but I guess not.

Turns out the C300 requires more voltage than the C100 so I will be at the service center first thing in the morning. AB Dionic batt is 12v and the C100 only needs 9. Damn....

I hope soon your C100 power system would be repaired. I am very cautious about using other power, to the point that I have been branded stupid. I don't use my V Lock batteries for powering C300 as I am paranoid. I just use the Canon batteries and it suits am comfortable with handholding. Recently ordered a Helix but without the power supply cable to power the C300. I am very conservative as far as using other power supplies are concerned. Let us know how it goes with Canon.

I also power my C100 with an Anton Bauer battery. Last year I bit the bullet and bought an Anton Bauer QRC-CA940 Gold Mount Power Bracket from Abel Cine in New York. I've been using it for about six months without a problem. The bracket has a hard wired power cable that plugs into the EOS C100 external power connection. I also power my on-camera Ninja Blade from one of the D-Taps on the power bracket using a Switronix PTC-NPF Coiled Powertap Cable. According to Anton Bauer's web site, the QRC-CA940 is a smaller version of the QR-CA940 and is compatible with the C100.

I was filming in NYC and had a day off. I have ordered from B&H for over 20 years and had never been there, so instead of going to the museum I went to B&H. Wow! I was mesmerized. The first department I was in was audio and just started loading up. When the rep asked if there's anything else I needed I ordered the Dtap cable. I should have waited until I was in the pro video department to order. They would have known more. Oh well. I have an appointment at Canon this morning to drop it off. If the repair isn't too expensive I'll probably get the AF upgrade since I'm there.

However, when I did attach this cable, before I turned the camera on, I thought doing this isn't too smart because in the jostling of doing handheld the power cable going into the female could get disconnected while rolling and I should just stick with batteries. But since I spent the $40 on the cable I was going to use it and made the mistake of turning the camera on. I will let you guys know what the repair bill is.

UPDATE FROM OP:

It blew two fuses, they're .07¢ each. Total repair = $360. I got off easy, could have blow a board.

The Switronix XP-DV-C300/20 works perfectly with the C100, C300, & C500.

Makes sense. Its like a head gasket on your car. Parts are like, $30? Labor is like $800..
Gotta disassemble the camera down to the main board, which is a full disassembly. its almost the most you can do on the camera just shy of changing the sensor.

Good luck. Hope it works out for ya!

If it's designed correctly the fuses should be easily accessible, after all they are designed to fail in a situation like this.
You don't disassemble a whole car engine to replace fuses either.

BAD NEWS UPDATE: Canon called, it was worse than they originally thought. Besides the two fuses it blew the mother board. So the repair is now $680. That's what I get for ordering a video camera part in the audio department!

Oh man, I just did the same thing! Ordered the wrong cable for my C300, taking it into Canon Hollywood tomorrow morning.

Really wish there were some official parts for things like this, sifting through all the 3rd party crap is a bit tiresome.

I do not think Canon makes a Dtap cable for the C100 or C300 so we have to use after market. Here's a way you can save money on expensive repairs, I am joining retroactively. You get 20% off parts and A FREE LOANER!!!!!

Bummer is that I lose all my settings which I had tweaked nicely.

From now on I will just use batteries. I don't know what got into me using the Dtap for the camera. The battery lasts for hours, I have 2, will just buy one more. This $700 mistake has taught me a lesson!

+1 on Canon's CPS program. They actually replaced my 20 year old 70-200 with a new 70-200 IS markII for repair cost. I know that's not the way they normally do it, but it shows the lengths they'll go to in order to keep the pros happy.
