Help...Hyperdeck Shuttle (1) vs. Canon 60D

As we know, the 60D downconverts while recording. Today I tried to use my Hyperdeck Shuttle as a converter to feed video village.

Sent HDMI from camera to HDS
Sent HDMI from HDS to Lilliput monitor -- viewfinder
Sent SDI from HDS to Marshall monitor -- video village monitor

Looked fine when everything was connected. However, when I hit record and the 60D went into SD monitoring mode, I lost both the HDMI and SDI output of the HDS. Nothing sent to either monitor. Tried one monitor at a time. Nothing. Bypassed the unit entirely and was able to get a signal direct to the HDMI monitor.

Black Magic's site is not helpful...is the Hyperdeck (first generation) unable to sync up to the 60D's HDMI downconverted-while-recording signal? Or is there something wrong with my particular unit? I've ruled out the cables and monitors.

try to get press record on the HDS ONLY and leave the 60D on monitoring mode. Let me know what is the result ok.

Thanks

When I press record (or stop) on the HDS and leave the 60D in monitoring mode, I get an HD signal on both monitors. When I then press record on the 60D, the image goes blank instead of shifting to a standard def signal. When plugged directly to an HDMI monitor the signal changes resolution as expected.

i guess im confused. We know that the 60d as like the rest of the canons baring the 7d drops to SD when you hit record. This is exactly what it sounds like it happening here. What is your goal? to record hd both in camera and on the shuttle? I don't think this will be possible at all.

I'm not trying to record with the HDS. I'm trying to use its splitter/converter functions to feed two video monitors: one HDMI and one HD-SDI.

It works in monitoring mode, but as soon as I press record on the camera, both monitors lose signal. Since one monitor is my viewfinder, I obviously can't operate. Even with just the HDMI monitor connected through the HDS, I lose picture.

Trying to confirm whether it's a design flaw of the HDS, or a repair issue for either my HDS or camera.

Thanks!

By the way, my Blackmagic HDMI to HD-SDI mini-converter does the auto-switch to 480i HDMI just fine. So I guess it's not the camera.

I see...in that case this could be the HDS (v1) issue. By the way, what an expensive way of splitting the footage for monitoring! Have you tried any other splitter for the same purpose? And why not record in the HDS to begin with?

Thanks for sharing this anyway.

P.s. By the way, have you tried to compare the footage quality between the RAW and the Compressed 60D on the card? Thanks in advance for answering.

I bought it primarily for the cross-conversion capabilities. The recording is a secondary benefit to me. It was actually cheaper and more flexible than many converter-only solutions, and works well for me in other situations.

It's true that HDMI splitters are much cheaper, but since my Marshall field monitor is HD-SDI, I'd still need to convert after splitting (which means more cables, more boxes, more power issues to solve...not what I prefer on a fast-moving corporate location shoot). The HDMI feed is for an inexpensive director's confidence monitor (or if I'm working with a director or client who needs a better image, I give them the Marshall and keep the HDMI monitor on the camera).

That's the hope anyway.

BM support is now telling me that, unlike their mini-converters, and unlike monitors, the HDS doesn't initiate a handshake when the signal is interrupted. It waits for the camera to initiate handshake. Their theory (which makes sense) is that the 60D is also not sending a new handshake signal when going into record mode. So...it just probably won't work.

I haven't ever tried to record on the HDS. With the 60D, it wouldn't make any sense, since the camera doesn't output a clean signal. I don't even own an SSD...maybe when prices come down further. Then I can compare RAW vs. DVCProHD on my HPX500. Might be useful for greenscreen...

I bought an OCZ 120 GB SSD for $80 recently. It has pretty decent performance. I have seen others at that price too.

- OCZ 120GB Agility 3 Series SATA

You might watch a site like Tech Bargains, etc.

I always compare the price to film, then it seems pretty cheap! :)

FWIW, my Canon T4i maintains an HD signal when it switches to recording (as far as I can tell, along with others.) You might try that with the Hyperdeck.

A new body is $850, so swapping out might not cost you much at all. It also has the articulating LCD, touch screen, video auto focus, face tracking. Automatically restarts a video file when it reaches 4GB. Two step heat sensor, yellow when getting warm, red before shut down.

It is a nice camera.

Sorry, somewhat OT. Good luck!

Michael
