Help for Dummies

Anyone have a site for Dummies in regards to QuickTime, QuickTime PN, how to use them all in Final Cut, frame rates what means what etc.

Yes. I have QT PN on my FS-100 and set the DVX200 at 720P/30PN and it won't record anything. What's the difference between QT and QT PN?

What are your cam settings?

What are your FS-100 settings?

Be specific. That would be the optimal starting point.

You can't shoot with any of the PN settings from your HVX to your Firestore. You use the PN option in the Firestore to do a pulldown to your 720p 24p or 720p 30p so that it is the same frame rate as shooting PN material.

Set your HVX to 720p/24p not 24pn.

Also, don't bother shooting with the quicktime option if you are doing post in Final Cut. The quicktime files that the Firestore makes don't jive to well with Final Cut. Have Final Cut make the QTs from the P2 files.

What do you mean the QT files don't work well? I 've imported some without any problem and isn't that the major selling point of the FS-100 upgrade to 4.0 to have native QT files so you don't have to have the P2? P2 Files mean double the storage and that's one thing I'm trying to accomplish reducing storage space.

When you shoot QTs directly, the spanned clips are broken up into different clips every 2.5 min, while with P2 clips imported to QTs from final cut, long clips are kept long.

Additionally, importing FS-100 QT clips, I always get a FC6 Message stating that the clips are not optimized for final cut and that I should recapture the material.

If you are worried about double storage, shoot with P2, import those with FC, and then format your FS-100. That way you have FC optimized clips with longer than 2.5 min spans and the same amount of storage.

People like to hold onto P2 files on top of their QTs because they are the raw footage that can be imported into different editing systems with optimal compatibility.

The P2 MXF files are still restricted to 4GB chunks vs. the 2GB chunks that the FS-100 records. The difference is that P2-aware applications will recognize spanned clips and treat them as one recording, and since FCP always rewraps them into QT containers, you wind up with a single large QT file.
