Is there a way to record straight onto a computer through FireWire.
I've read about adobe onlocation here on the forums but I'm not sure how it works exactly. Can anybody tell me if I can capture into the software in 720p30 without a p2 card in the camera. I ask this cause I can't set the camera to HD with only tape in the camera. Will the options change when I go thru FireWire.

Here's the long story as to why I ask this question.
I work in a public university. Our small AV department of 3 full time staff and 4 part time students have (3) hvx200a in our inventory without P2 cards. My boss', who is the head of the department, background is as a tv and broadcast producer. Myself and the 3rd staff member are sound engineers by trade. My boss will not allow me to purchase any p2 cards and I have several video projects to do for my higher up boss. His reasoning is that he wants to get rid of the cameras so he can lobby to buy better equipment. He believes a proper camera should be an over the shoulder kind with hdsdi outs and genlok. The cameras he had in mind are $7k-$9k. I know the purchase will not be approved for several years or even before he retires. Our yearly budget is only $40,000 and we do more business with sound systems and lighting than anything else. In the past video projects have been done about 3-4 times a year. Now that I've been on board we have had more video projects going on, about 7-8 a year. This has been frustrating but he's a bit stubborn. He actually does not want projects to look good for fear that the higher up management will say we already have good enough equipment and we need no more.
We are an event center so I understand why sdi is important since imag is our most obvious video service but we also host weddings and many conventions where recording could be offered as well. We'll this has turned into more of a rant. My biggest question for the community is up top. I really could use help learning how it's possible to record 720p straight onto a laptop via FireWire.
