HELP! Can't import .MXF files

I'm using Vegas Pro 8.0c under Windows XP.

I've been asked to edit a project that the previous editor had been working on in FCP on a Mac. (Actually, I assume he used FCP, although the files are in a folder marked "Avid".) The hard drive was sent to me, and I used the MacDrive software to access it. I copied the files off the Mac drive onto one of my external hard drives. So far, so good.

Now I know I won't be able to use any of the FCP work the previous editor did, and that's fine. It looks like all the raw footage files are here, but they're .MXF files. I can add them to the Vegas Project, but they don't show a thumbnail and when added to the timeline, all I get is audio. So this is clearly a codec issue.

On a previous project, I just XDCAM Clip Browser to convert .MXF files that were shot on an XDCAM. But Clip Browser doesn't 'see' these files. From what little I can tell, they seem to be DVCPro files, but I may be wrong.

I installed Neoscene, but that didn't help. I also installed Avid Codecs LE, but that didn't help either.

Can you help me get these files into Vegas???

ADDENDUM: We don't know what camera the footage was shot on, or what NLE was used previously. The person who produced this film knows very little about the technical side, and apparently we can't ask the previous DP or editor for various reasons. So we're flying blind here.

I don't think Vegas supports DVCpro HD MXF files. Neoscene won't convert DVCpro HD either (only h.264, AVCHD and HDV). Download the trial for Neo (just Neo, without the scene) and try transcoding the files to cineform with that.

If you're seeing that "skipping" note with Raylight, you're trying to convert files, and you don't have to. If they're OP-ATOM P2 MXF files, you can just drop them onto the timeline.

Thing is, I don't know what kind of files they are. But when I just drop them into the Vegas timeline, all I get is the audio track, no video.

I had a similar problem with some Quicktime .MOV files. Resolved it by going back to an earlier version of Quicktime. Just can't figure out what to do to resolve this one.

Then someone used a codec Vegas can't read and wrapped it in MXF. If you're getting audio only, could be DIVX.

I've got DivX installed. I talked to one guy who said he edited it in Vegas, but I don't think he was the last one to work on it, because the .MXF files are in folders labeled "Avid". Not sure how to proceed from here.

Having DIVX installed doesn't mean Vegas will edit it. But it's definitely not a DV MXF if it's not working.

Try changing the extension of one of the files from .mxf to .dv (or .avi) and try it again in ensoft.
