Help a limey out

Hey guys. I'm a bit confused. When I start a new project out on Sony Vegas Pro 9, what template should I choose? I always shoot squeeze mode (PAL) with my DVX100B.

And how would you choose the rendering settings?

Also, and pardon me for being a total douche, do I render then compress because I think I've been doing it wrong lol.

Either way I've been spending more time with my DVX than anything. Editing really gets on my nerves as I struggle to understand anything about it..

Does Vegas do the compressing or do I have to get a compressing programme for my footage?

Cheers!!!! :D

PAL DV Widescreen.

Depends what it is you're rendering for.

Yes.

Thanks! I've noticed that when I do choose the PAL DV Widescreen template, the picture quality immediately becomes really shitty.......???? When I say shitty, I mean horribly grainy.

Is this supposed to happen?

Also could you point me in the right direction for compressing in Vegas? Like where abouts it is....i.e under tool/file etc? I'll figure it out from there. Cheers dooood!

How were you viewing it before you chose PAL DV Widescreen?

Hi David. I was using this template-PAL DV (720x576, 25.000 fps)

Picture looks fine with that, soon as I tried the DV widescreen template, picture quality became horrible, fuzzy and shrunken..

Is it actually widescreen footage? Post a screenshot.

How? And am I supposed to compress all my videos?

"Compression" is what the codec does. Vegas will compress your footage according to the needs of the codec you choose.

The choice of codec has to do with what you want to do with the video once you've rendered it.

Mainconcept MPEG-2 encoder included with Vegas is not very good. The only way I can get barely acceptable footage is when I max out bitrate and reduce intervals between key frames (3 frames is the minimum). Otherwise footage shows noticeable shimmering and degradation in GOPs.

Lol, again, how do I do this?

You want to know how to post a screen shot? There are many ways to do it.

Basically you use the “print screen” key to load the image into the clipboard, then use whatever graphic program you want to “paste” the image. Then you can crop / edit the image and save it as a jpg. Personally I use paint shop pro to crop the screenshots and then use http://imageshack.us/ to host images.

"Print screen" does not work with many video players that do not use Windows GDI. In this case, use a player that has "print screen" or "save snapshot" menu item.

Right, but that's not what I'm referring to. You can do a whole-screen shot (Prt Scrn) and include the video in the preview window.
