Mixing formats in FCP

I shot half the footage on DV tape in standard format and the other in HD 1080i with the hvx on p2. I am now editing and how the two different formats what can I do to put it all on the same timeline and have the SD stuff have the same parameters as the HD stuff (when i drop it into the HD timeline and then render it it shows up small in the middle of the screen surrounded in black)

i assume your timeline is an hd sequence which would make your sd footage appear as a small box surrounded by black. This is because of the resolution difference. If you take a sd sequence and drop the sd footage it, it will appear normal. once you drop in hd footage, it will fill in letterbox style. keep in mind that the sd sequence will drop the hd res to sd as well.

It all depends what you final output it. SD or HD. how are you going to deliver?

yes

yes

my question is i want to make a final movie including scenes editied in both formats and I want them to be the same size and shape just one being HD format and the other being SD format is that possible? how do i do it? ( i am editing the scenes in different sequences but when i get it finished i want to go from HD to SD )

Edit on an SD timeline. This will allow your DV to be the correct resolution and you can scale down your hd to fit.

Set your timeline for the standard SD settings.
When you drop your hd on the timeline it will scale down to fit the frame.
If you don't want letterboxed HD you will have to scale your hd up until it fits the SD frame top to bottom.

To adapt a current project.
Open you project
Create a new sequence
In the Browser "Apple N"
setup the preset for the new sequence DV NTSC 48
Go to the Completed HD project timeline
In the time line Select All "Apple A"
In the new SD timeline Paste "Apple V"

This will put the HD timeline into a SD timeline and will give you a starting point for tweeking.

Good luck
