Hi I am new here. I came here to learn all I can. ;) My brother, who is an independent film maker just bought the 550 D and loves it. Initially I was going to buy a Sony HD camcorder until I saw the vid clips of his 550D! I understand it is a partial sensor. I understand the 5D MK II has a full sensor, better shallow depth of field and HD vid capability. I learned recently that the 7D has a partial sensor, too and HD vid capability.

What I want to know:

What is the difference between the 550D and the 7D?

Are there any differences on the video quality between the 550D, 7D and 5DmkII? If there are, exactly where are those differences and are they substantial?

My first impulse was to buy the 550D, mainly for producing a DVD guitar instructional video, potentially a future film project next year and a great overall photography camera, new hobby for me.

THanks!

Cary

Hi cary welcome to DVXuser,

Read the canon 5D and 7D sections a bit. All the info you desire is in there.

my best advice would be to look at what people have been creating with both cameras, and judge for yourself, which camera you should choose. there is no correct answer. its personal preference, and what you need out of a camera.

Hi Cary and welcome

One way to search dvxuser is to use google. You type your search phrase followed by site:dvxuser

For example if you want to learn what is auto gain control on the 550d put the following into google

550d auto gain control site:dvxuser.com

like in this LINK

A word of advice - the question you are asking about which is better 550d, 7d or 5dm2 is a hotly debated topic and dvxusers can
get passionate about defending which camera is best. Address that topic with care.

Hmmm....

How to piss off camera owners 101. Let's address a few bits of terminology before you go forth and try to slay dragons with your trusty sword...

No. The 550D does not have a partial sensor. It's senor is 100% complete. What it does have is what is called a "crop" sensor, or a sensor that is not the same size as a 35mm piece of film. You won't get far in conversations if you get that wrong.

I understand the 5D MK II has a full sensor

It has a "full-frame" sensor. Meaning it covers the same space a still 35mm camera would.

better shallow depth of field and HD vid capability.

Better is a matter of opinion. The 5D, can certainly produce a more shallow DOF than a crop sensor camera. Whether that's "better" is a matter up for debate. Personally, I'd say for 99% of users, it's not.

I learned recently that the 7D has a partial sensor, too and HD vid capability.

Crop sensor.

What is the difference between the 550D and the 7D?

There are probably 300 or more threads on this discussion in this forum alone. Spend some time reading. It boils down to a couple of issues. The sensor in the 550D is exactly the same as the one in the 7D. The 7D is built better, heavier, and is aimed at pros, while the 550D is aimed at consumers. You can get the same image out of both cameras if you know what you're doing.

The 5D can produce superior video in some circumstances, but not in others. Again, there is a treasure trove of information here, and on forums all over the internet.

I'd humbly suggest you buy one of these camras and focus on the photography first. Once you can do that with some skill, move on to video. All the same principles apply, but video is a LOT harder to do well, and imposes some restrictions still photographs do not.
