Hello, Hello by deedive

This was an interesting film...although it didn't do much for me. The story was very slow, as is any one-sided conversation. The sound needs some work as I had trouble understanding quite a bit of it. That said...very cool concept for a film. Would have liked to see more of the animation and a much better ending. Keep making films and pushing the limits.

The idea was there but the execution wasn't. The actress was bit annoying and the conversation dragged on way to long. Nice integration of the art work animation. Overall it was a pretty good little movie.

lot of long winded dialog that started to lose me. there were distracting audio breaks. the animations were clever but didn't seem to fit properly. when they first appeared, I thought you should have used real shots of the pad, so I never got to where you where going. and I didn't understand the hold shot on the building at the end.

I enjoyed very much the acting for that long telephone call - it is not easy! The animated drawing were a nice detail. Thank you!

Well... it took until minute five for her to get off of the cell phone, then the movie started, then it ended.

Cute girl. Week story. Ok shots. Even lighting.

Hey,

Just caught the movie. I really liked your lead actress. I thought she sounded like she was having the conversation on the phone and so she seemed very nature in it. There were some pauses in her dialogue that didn't seem long enough for her to have actually heard a response but other than that it was good work. Her look when the room changes is great also. Subtle yet surprised.

The lighting was really good in this as well. AND the production value was very high indeed. The sound of the people working seemed annoying but really helped with the transition to the new, better place that she ended up in.

Unfortunately, I didn't think there was actually a story there. I liked where it was going but I don't think this can qualify as a story. The inserts of drawings seemed weird and didn't pertain to the story at all, so it just seemed very out of place. I liked the effect, just not sure this was the piece for it.

Overall a good effort but the lack of story kills this piece for me. But thanks for showing and I think you'll be a force to be reckoned with when you work towards a story. And I can't wait. Thanks for sharing.

deedive!

what a great little short!

running commentary:

great intro music, the best of the film.

i really like the digging-through-the-purse shot, well done, good choice for the opening shot.

i do like her acting, i think it comes across as really natural, her conversation isn't contrived - perhaps it's because she is always looking around, as if she is really thinking about those things she talks about.

the inserts could be better, at first i thought you had run out of time and you had to draw in the missing scenes. but ha, "does he keep them in his office?" "NO".

i like that you can hear construction noises in the background, echoey noises. for some reason the echoey makes all the difference, really makes me see the apartment in the concrete jungle.

i don't like her reaction at the end, it's the only moment in the short where i think she's acting. but great lighting in the nice apt! did you have an HMI shooting from left to right in the background? the light looks layered.

i watched this 4 or 5 times already. i love it.

I swear I recognize that music. Sounds like....damn. Can't think of it.

Very nice lighting and shots all around. It looked great.
Loved all the drawings and animations. Very nice.
Shot in the bag is good. It's cool because you don't know what it is at first.

Then there's the big middle part............Huh? I thought it was rather pointless and dry, except for the drawings. No offense, but I did not think she deserved to get that new place.

Nice sound design. And then it ends. Ok.

Really good job with the technical side. I yearned for more story. Maybe next time...

interesting movie

don't get the story at all, how'd she wind up with the new place? that said the acting is natural.

would've liked to see the animations up front, maybe as a lead in, and maybe she could be drawing them and then in the end she draws the new place to where she is then stuck within her animations? that would be twilighty?

good shots throughout, really liked the executions of the animations, the boss character was funny, as was the ending in how it matched the roomate's suicide.

Very cool opening shot! Well thought out and executed nicely.

The film itself didn't work for me. I think mainly the pacing killed it, although overall I liked the concept itself. The sketches were a very nice touch - however they just didn't feel like they belonged in the film, and I think that goes back to your pacing. The inclusion of the sketches kinda calls for something a little more upbeat but as it is the phone call drags. When it first cut to the sketches I actually thought it was a slug or placeholder of some sort for an insert you didn't get.

Nice work overall though. Looking forward to more from you!

well, u are both kinda right.
these where quick animations i did so that i could continue editing. I will replace with more finished animation sequences, but i just did this for the time being.

Thanx everyone for your great comments

Interesting film. It felt a little like I was sitting in the room with her, waiting for her to get off the phone. It kind of dragged on a little there but I think I see what you were going for. The audio was a little low in some places. The cutaways were interesting. You got some beautiful images out of the read and has some great color and lighting. Very pretty picture. Good job!

did you have an HMI shooting from left to right in the background? the light looks layered.

there were two 300 watt daylight CFL lamps. one as an extra kicker on the actor and one somewhere in the background. and then one muted HMI as key, along with the already generous amount of daylight that was available in the apt.

overall, the location was great and helped plenty.
